The Kyrgyz Republic, also known as Kyrgyzstan and formerly Kirghizia, is a country in Central Asia. The mountainous country is landlocked to the north by Kazakhstan, to the east by China, to the southwest by Tajikistan, and to the west by Uzbekistan. The capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan is Bishkek, which is also the administrative centre (but is only surrounded by and not an actual part of) the Chuy Province. For tourists, what Kyrgyzstan has to offer are beaches, trekking and camping opportunities, and skiing opportunities, among others. Additionally, Kyrgyzstan is a budget-friendly tourist destination!
What to see & do
Issyk Kul Lake - The endorheic Issyk Kul lake in the northern Tian Shan mountains is popular tourist destination in the country. The name means 'hot lake' in the Kyrgyz language, owing to the fact that despite its being surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the lake never freezes. With the length of 182 kilometres (113 miles), width of 60 kilometres (37 miles), and an area of 6,236 square kilometres (2,408 square miles), it is the second largest mountain lake in the world. There are plenty of hotels, vacation resorts, and boarding houses along the lake's northern shore.
Experience a nomadic lifestyle - The Kyrgyz people were originally nomadic people, and you can still have an authentic experience! Plan to spend at least one night in a yurt (a portable, bent-dwelling structure used by nomads), and you can actually have this arranged by the Community Based Tourism.
Prezhevalski Garden - The Prezhevalski memorial garden provides a great view overlooking the Pristan area. There is also a museum dedicated to Nikolai Mikhaylovich Przhevalsky, a Russian geographer and an explorer who died in the area in 1888. The museum contains a giant map that marks his travels and several photos, maps, and other artefacts from his journeys.
How to get around within Kyrgyzstan
Mass public transportation available in the country includes local buses, electronic trolley buses, and public vans. The most common and convenient mode of transportation are minibuses and taxi cabs, which also frequently run around the city. Hitchhiking is possible in Kyrgyzstan but the ride is often not free. You will most likely be asked to contribute a small amount for petrol, or at most the same price for riding the bus. Long distance bike treks are also popular around Issyk Kul, and one particularly interesting method of transportation is by the saddle of a horse. For horseback riding, this can usually be arranged by your tourist agency. If you'd rather drive your own vehicle, rent a private car from rental companies, but note that auto insurance is not very common in Kyrgyzstan.
