As joint public and military airport within the Phunphin District of Surat Thani Province, Thailand, Surat Thani Airport serves as the home to a Royal Thai Air Force or RTAF squadron. Located approximately 21 kilometres west of the city of Surat Thani, the airport has served approximately 1.3 million passengers in 2014 and only has one asphalt-surfaced runway that measures 3,000 metres or 9.843 feet long. Surat Thani Airport is currently operated by the Department of Aviation in Thailand. It resides at an elevation of 87 metres or 286 feet above mean sea level.

Surat Thani is a city in southern Thailand, within the province of the same name. Surat Thani Province is the largest of all the southern provinces of Thailand. The city is mainly known as a transfer to nearby Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan islands. With no major tourist attractions within the city itself, Surat Thani Province, on the other hand, is bordered by limestone mountains of the Phuket range to the west, and the hills of the Nakhon Si Thammarat mountain range to the east. Among the national parks within the province include Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park, Khao Sok National Park, Khlong Phanom National Park, Kaeng Krung National Park, Than Sadet-Ko Pha-ngan National Park, and Tai Rom Yen National Park. Meanwhile, the delta of the Tapi and Phum Duang Rivers is located directly north of Surat Thani city, and features channels with small islands covered with mangroves and orchards.

When visiting Surat Thani, do not miss its various lively festivals, such as Chak Phra Festival, Rambutan and Thai Fruit Festival, Boon Sad Dean Sib Festival, Surat Thani Songkran Festival, Surat Thani Loy Krathong Festival on the Tapi River, and more. Other sites to visit within and around the Surat Thani area include the Phra Boromathat Chaiya pagoda, Oyster Farm, Ban Khlong Sai Monkey Training Centre, Wat Suan Mokkhaphalaram, Phumriang Village, Wat Wiang, Wat Kaeo, Wat Long, Rock Fish Museum, Phra Borommathat Chaiya, among others.

Phumriang Village is a Muslim fishing village known for the locals’ hand-woven silk cloths, and for leaf-weaved hats by some of the Buddhist Thais in the area. Another noteworthy attraction is the Rock Fish Museum, a well-known tourist attraction and is unique due to its more than 1,000 lifelike marine fish sculptures. The museum was founded by Mr. Kitti Sin-udom in the early 1990s, who also spent approximately ten years of his life to stone carve most if not all of the marine fish found in the Gulf of Thailand.

How to get around within Surat Thani

To get around Surat Thani in Thailand, you can travel by road, rail, or water via its roadways, railways, and ferries for its islands. Some of the roads that serve Surat Thani include the Asian Highway 2 (Thailand Route 41), Rte 401 for Takua Pa to Nokhon Si; Rte 44 for Kanchanadit to Krabi. Rail goes via Surat Thani Railway Station, which is around 15 kilometres from downtown Surat Thani area, with its branch line reaching the western end at Kirirat Nikhom Railway Station. Ferries meanwhile connect the mainland Surat Thani with the islands of Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan.
