Why visit San Sebastian?

Situated on the coast, looking out to the Bay of Biscay, San Sebastian is one of Spain’s most beautiful cities, and a celebrated attraction along the country’s Atlantic coast. Surrounded by forest-covered hills, boasting long golden shorelines, and a beautiful Old Town, you won’t find anything to be disappointed in when you visit San Sebastian. Enjoy the singular charm of Basque Country, one of Spain’s most fascinating regions.

Things to do in San Sebastian

While Bilbao may be the largest city in the region, San Sebastian is undoubtedly the most chic. A resort town first and foremost, visitors to this city will find themselves indulging in all the leisure that San Sebastian affords.

Tour the Old Town, where ochre and rust coloured buildings cluster close together to create narrow cobbled pathways. You can find popular pinxto eateries here (where you can enjoy light savoury snacks local to the area), as well as the popular fish market, and the incredible Basilica de Santa Maria del Coro, a shining example of ornate Baroque architecture.

In fact, the Basilica sits at the base of Monte Urgull, which you must spend a little time investigating. On the top of this hill, you will find the Castillo de la Mota, an impressive medieval fortress, and you’ll find the walk up as breathtaking as the fantastic view from the top.

However, one of the main reasons visitors spend time in this town is its reputation for a beach destination, and there are plenty to choose from here. For pretty surrounds and great access, go to the Bay of Concha. This beach offers lots of restaurants and bars, and has calm and gentle waters. For surfers, try the Playa de la Zurriola, which also has lots of options in the way of beach sports. For seclusion and beauty, book a day trip to the gorgeous Isla de Santa Clara.
