Discover Mykonos
Mykonos Airport (JMK) is the primary travel hub of the lovely Cycladic isle of Mykonos. It is one of the nation’s busiest because of the island’s popularity, but you won’t find a long list of modern features here. It’s a very compact facility, and houses an ATM, three bars, and a small cafeteria. There’s also a little cafeteria where you can purchase snacks and drinks.
Mykonos Airport is a stone’s throw away from the main town, only 4km in distance, and you can easily hop on one of the local buses, or hail a cab from outside the terminal. A taxi ride will only take 10 minutes, and cost a fairly reasonable 15EUR ($22).
Flights to Mykonos are run by Aegean Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Garuda Indonesia, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Swiss Air.
Why visit Mykonos?
It is said that the Greek island of Mykonos was formed by the fallen giants slayed by mighty Hercules, and its mythical genesis is perhaps only upstaged by its glamorous reputation. For years, the white-washed towns, golden beaches and sparkling waters of Mykonos have been the destination of choice for travellers looking to let their hair down in paradise. You will find holidaying families, partying students, romancing couples, and maybe even a celebrity or two taking advantage of this paradisiacal, and inclusive Grecian island.
Things to do in Mykonos
Start in the main town called Mykonos, but nicknamed Chora (meaning town). The streets here are predominately made of marble, and strolling through the narrow pathways will lead you through the picturesque churches, houses and shops, and then down to the gorgeous waterfront.
Along this same waterfront you will be able to see ‘Little Venice’, called so for the buildings that seem to float on the water. Or head up to the traditional windmills that are perhaps the most iconic image of the island. You can duck into the excellent Archeological Museum, and the Folklore Museum, both of which will offer an insight into the history of the island.
Known for being extremely progressive and open, Mykonos has welcomed the LGBT community with open arms for decades, and you will find some of the best gay-friendly clubs and bars on this island, and particularly in Chora.
There are also beaches for every type of traveller; visit Paradise Beach for a party, Psarou if you’re with family, Platis Yalos for the facilities (especially their sun loungers), and Kapari for a little secluded spot away from the crowds.
Best time to visit Mykonos
· Visiting Mykonos is best from about May to October, when the averages are between 19 and 26°C.
· The peak season is summertime (June-August) when highs can soar to 30°C, the clubs and bars are full, and the island is in full swing. Inevitably, the prices rise with the temperature, and if you don’t like crowds, this may not be the best time for you to visit.
· A good bet if you’re on a budget, or just aren’t a fan of crowds, is September and October, when the sea is warm from the summer sun, and the days can still see highs of 22-27°C.
