What can you do in Geraldton?

Situated on the Batavia Coast of Western Australia, Geraldton is one of the state’s natural jewels. Loaded with small town charm, a fascinating indigenous and colonial history, with enough outdoor activities to keep you occupied for weeks, Geraldton has plenty to offer its visitors.

In the town itself you can find the Western Australian Museum, which charts everything from the rich Yamaji culture, to the European settlements and their marine explorations of Western Australia. Stroll through Geraldton’s streets and you will come across the Old Goal Museum—a great family activity—and walk past the impressive St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. On the foreshore you will find a lively atmosphere and lots of restaurants, cafes and bars to fill your evenings.

However, it is for the natural attractions that most people make a stop to this part of the world. From the powder white beaches that line the shoreline, to the Abrolhos Islands 60 kilmometres out to sea, encircled by rainbow corals where keen divers and snorkellers can explore the underwater ecosystems that thrive here.

On dry land, from winter leading into spring, many head to the Chapman River Regional Park, Mullewa, or the Coalseam Conservaton Park, where they can see over 300 wildflower species bloom in a riot of colour, and carpets the harsh landscape of the Outback for a few months.

When should you go?

Often likened to a Mediterranean climate, Geraldton has mild winters and hot summers. Expect averages in the colder months to sit around 20°C, and the warmer seasons to hover around 32-33°C. Spring, when the wildflowers are out, is perhaps one of the most pleasant times of year to visit, with daily averages around 22-24°C.
