Fly to Bodrum, the popular and beautiful city on Turkey’s southern Aegean coast.
Servicing the sister towns of Bodrum and Milas, the Milas-Bodrum Airport sees over two million passengers a year. Situated on the southwest coast of Turkey’s Bodrum peninsula, BJV is also within a stone’s throw of the Grecian island of Kos. As one of Turkey’s busiest airports you can expect a decent range of facilities, such as access to a cafeteria, shops, an ATM, an information desk, as well as currency exchange and car rental services.
Airlines to Izmir
BJV is an international airport, but you will not find direct flights from Australia to Bodrum. Passengers will find that flights to Bodrum will be redirected to one or more transfer hubs, like Doha (DOH), Singapore (SIN), Istanbul (IST) or London (LHR).
There are several airline carriers that fly to Bodrum, these include: Air Berlin, Atlasjet, Corendon Airlines, Enter Air, First Choice Airways, LTU International, Martinair, Monarch Airlines, SunExpress, Onur Air, Pegasus Airlines, Primera Air, Rossiya, Thomas Cook Airlines, Transavia and Turkish Airlines.
Getting into Bodrum
Taxis can be located just outside the airport and the journey into Bodrum town centre will cost you about 150TRY ($70).
By public transport
There aren’t regular public transport services from Milas-Bodrum Airport, however, there are a few shuttle and coach services that run from BJV into Bodrum. The fares for these are typically around 16TRY ($8).
There is also the option to rent a car, which for some may be more convenient, and there are a few well known car hire companies that operate out of the airport. These include Hertz, Avis and Europcar.
What can you do in Bodrum?
Turkey’s celebrated Turquoise Coast has long been a getaway destination for northern Europeans seeking the sun, sea and sand that Bodrum can supply. However, what keeps people coming back to this gorgeous part of the world is the undeniable charm of Bodrum, along with its fascinating and weighty history.
Start in the Old Town, where curious alleyways lead you past white washed houses decorated with blooming flowers and viridian vines. Let yourself get lost in the winding passages, and you will discover tiny shops and cafes to investigate. When you emerge from this labyrinthine portion of the city you will be treated with the sight of the Castle of St. Peter, a medieval fortress built by the Knights of St John. Wander through this spectacular building, and up to its impressive towers.
Then step further back in time, by visiting the Mausoleum of Mausolus, once an ancient wonder of the world, this site is considered to be the burial ground of King Mausolus who reigned from 377-353BC. You can also visit the ancient ampitheatre of Bodrum, which looks out over the Aegean Sea, and imagine what it would have been like to see the speakers and players of another time perform.
Aside from the historical attractions of Bodrum, you can indulge in a Turkish bath, see the Museum of Underwater Archaeology, stroll through the town’s bazaar, and of course relax on one of the town’s many wonderful golden beaches.
When should you go?
Bodrum is lucky with its climate, as even in the coldest months between November and January, this town rarely drops below 12°C. Summer rises in heat and in people, expect June through August to be hopping with life, and averaging temperatures between 25-30°C. The shoulder months of April-May and September-October are worth investigating if you don’t fancy the crowds, but still want pleasant temperatures, as the mercury hovers between 17-26°C during these periods.
