Mauritania, officially known as the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is within the Maghreb region of western North Africa. Mauritania is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the North, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. Its capital and largest city is Nouakchott, and 90% of the country is within the Sahara Desert.

Mauritania’s Terjit is an oasis within the country. It is a well in a dry area that is popular among the country’s tourists. Stretching over a few hundred metres, the oasis can be accessed for a fee to rest within the tents in the palm grove. In the past Terjit has also been used for religious ceremonies, along with weddings and coronations. Chinguetti Mosque, within Chinguetti, Mauritania, is a mosque that was an ancient centre of worship made by the founders of the oasis city of Chinguetti. The mosque itself features a prayer room, with four aisles, a double-niched symbolic door. In 1970s there have been efforts made by the UNESCO to restore the mosque, along with the city, although intense desertification continues to threaten the stability of the mosque and its surroundings. Mauritania is also home to Banc d'Arguin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a nature reserve that serves as one of the main breeding sites for migratory birds such as flamingos, broad-billed sandpipers, pelicans, as well as terns. The National Museum of Mauritania, lastly, within Nouakchott, can be found southwest, west-northwest, and northeast of Hotel Mercure Marhaba, Hotel de Ville, Parc Deydouh, and Mosque Ould Abas, respectively. It is known for its archaeological and ethnographical collections. The museum has two galleries that feature collections of local costumes, arrowheads, and shreds, in addition to many. 


Mauritania’s Nouakchott International Airport operates short haul flights to numerous destinations such as Algiers, Algeria; Paris, France; Conakry, Guinea; Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire; Cotonou, Benin; Dakar, Senegal; and Tunis, Tunisia, among others, via airlines such as Air Algérie, Air France, Mauritania Airlines

International, Sénégal Airlines, and Tunisair. These flights can take an hour, to more than five hours in relation to the destination, the provider, and the schedule. 


Nouakchott International Airport only has one long haul flight. It operates flights to Istanbul, Turkey via Istanbul Atatürk Airport with the flights provided by Turkish Airlines. This flight can take around more than six hours to seven hours, depending on the flight schedule, among others.
