Visa information for travel to Bali

Australians require a visa to enter Indonesia. The good news is you can apply for a 30-day visa on arrival (VoA) at the airport or in advance online. It costs 150,000Rp (around AUD$12), payable with cash or credit card. You can extend your VoA once for a further 30 days at the immigration office in South Bali. Apply for extensions via the immigration website and always check the latest travel advice on Smartraveller.gov.au. Visa agents can expedite the process for an additional fee.

Don't forget travel insurance

A reliable insurance policy covering medical expenses is essential, but a comprehensive travel insurance plan can also cover you for cancelled flights, loss or theft of valuables and other unexpected emergencies.

There are many companies offering quick and easy quotes online. Cost will depend on the length of coverage and if you’ll be taking part in dangerous activities such as riding a motorbike, scuba diving or trekking. Expensive items such as camera gear and laptops may be insured for an extra premium.

Top tip

Many travel insurance companies will not cover injuries from motorbike accidents if you do not have an official motorcycle license.

Getting from Denpasar Airport

There are a good range of transport options available on arrival, and most travellers arriving at Denpasar will take a taxi directly from the airport. It’s worth checking to see if your hotel or resort offer airport transfers, as many of them do, and it’ll save you the cost of a journey.

  • Private Transfer: You can book a private taxi online with fares ranging from 90,000Rp to 200,000Rp for the short trip to Kuta.

  • Prepaid Taxi: There’s a prepaid airport taxi counter outside the arrivals hall. The minimum fare is 120,000Rp (AUD$10) which will get you to Kuta or Jimbaran. Seminyak or Denpasar is around 150,000Rp and Ubud 350,000Rp (AUD $12-30).

  • Bluebird Taxi: Bali’s most reliable metered taxi service frequently drops off departing travellers so if you head outside to departures, you may be able to hail one. Ensure the meter is on. Bluebird is the best option for getting to the airport.

  • Grab: The popular rideshare app now has a pickup service from the airport but, unlike elsewhere in Bali, fares are similar to airport taxis.

  • Bus: There are three public bus services going to Tabanan, Nusa Dua and Batubulan for less than a dollar – best suited to those travelling on a budget.

  • Car Hire: There are a range of providers offering car hire from Denpasar Airport. The average price of car hire is around $38 a day although it can sometimes be cheaper to head into the city and chose one of the other car hire locations in Denpasar.

Bali budgeting tips

Bali is excellent value compared with travel in Australia, but it can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.

Your budget will depend largely on how long you’re staying in Bali and the level of luxury you seek. You’ll get an inexpensive guesthouse in the backstreets of Kuta for $30 a night or a beachfront resort in Seminyak for $300. Shopping can be good value and some good-natured bargaining is still common at street stalls and markets.

Bargaining is expected at market stalls, making it a great place to chat with vendors and buy souvenits.

Here are some updated 2026 price estimates for Bali:

  • Street food snack $2

  • Bottle of Bintang $3–4

  • Litre of petrol $1.20

  • Meal for two in a fancy restaurant $70–80

  • Night in a hostel $35

  • Night in a three-star hotel $50

The best time to visit Bali

Bali's dry season runs from April to October, with July and August bringing the clearest skies and most reliable surf on the west coast, though expect peak crowds and higher prices. May, June, and September hit a sweet spot, offering dry weather with fewer tourists and better deals on accommodation.

The wet season from November to March brings daily tropical downpours, typically short and sharp in the afternoon. Prices drop significantly and the island stays lush and green, making it a worthwhile trade-off for budget-conscious travellers.

Bali's cultural calendar is also worth factoring in. The Hindu festival of Nyepi (the Day of Silence, usually in March) offers a truly unique experience unlike anywhere else in the world.

FAQs about visiting Bali and Denpasar

Bali is generally one of the safer destinations in Southeast Asia, with petty theft the most common concern. Keep an eye on belongings in busy areas like Kuta and watch out for scams targeting tourists. The biggest safety risks are actually on the roads, so exercise caution if renting a scooter, and in the ocean, where strong currents and shore breaks catch inexperienced swimmers off guard each year.

Many nationalities, including Australians, can enter Indonesia visa-free for up to 30 days, while a Visa on Arrival is available at Ngurah Rai International Airport for a fee of around USD $35, extendable for another 30 days. It's worth checking the latest entry requirements before you travel, as Indonesia's visa policies have evolved in recent years.

Indonesia's currency is the rupiah (IDR), and while card payments are increasingly accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger shops, cash is still king at local warungs, markets, and smaller businesses. ATMs are widely available across tourist areas, though it pays to withdraw larger amounts at a time to avoid repeated transaction fees — and always check your home bank's international withdrawal charges before you go.
