Driving around Zadar Airport

The roads in Croatia and around Zadar are modern and easy to drive on. Leaving the airport, the 502 goes into Zadar and the 424 east takes you to the main motorways travelling north and south.

Most Croatian motorways charge a toll. There are two toll systems, an open system where you pay as you go through the toll, and a closed system, where you will be given a ticket at a toll as you get on the motorway and will pay as you go through another toll leaving the motorway. The ticket indicates how much you will be charged so be sure to keep it safe or you will be charged the maximum fee.

Zadar

Zadar is a coastal city with a historic old town surrounded by ancient walls. Visitors can walk around the walls, marvelling at the Venetian gates, or head to the city’s Roman ruins. In addition, there are medieval churches, museums and cosmopolitan cafes to explore.

Zadar city is just 18 minutes away from Zadar Airport. Road 502 leaves the airport and goes all of the way into the city. There are lots of pedestrianised areas in the old town, particularly within the city walls. Drivers will find a few car parks in the old town but it’s generally easier to park in spaces alongside the walls, in the newer part of town.

Split

Split is the second largest city in Croatia and sits sandwiched between dramatic mountains and the Adriatic Sea. It is home to Diocletian’s Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Roman monument. The vibrant city also has some great culture and nightlife and provides a jumping off point for the Dalmatian coast’s idyllic beach islands.

Split is a 90 minute drive from Zadar Airport, taking the 424 and then the A1 southbound. Split’s city centre has many pedestrianised areas but there are lots of parking spots, both on-street and in designated car parks, on the periphery of the city centre.

Plitvice Lakes National Park

Plitvice Lakes National Park is another of Croatia’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The 16 lakes that make up the park are connected by waterfalls and dense woodland, home to bears, wolves and deer. There are various accommodation options around the park and lots of walking trails within it.

The National Park is 80 minutes’ drive from Zadar Airport, travelling on the 424 and then the E65A. There are two entrances to the park, both with reasonably priced parking.
