Getting to your destination

Linz Airport is a great starting point for an Austrian adventure. Here are just some of the places it’s easy to get to when you hire a car from Linz Airport.

Linz

The city of Linz sits on the banks of the Danube. It is Austria’s third biggest city and home to an ancient castle, winding old town streets and a stunning baroque-style central square. In contrast, the city also boasts the striking glass structure of its lauded cutting edge art gallery. Linz hosts a number of festivals throughout the year and offers a delicious range of local and international cuisine.

It takes around 20 minutes to drive from Linz Airport to the city. Drivers should take the L533 east and then the 139 into the city. There a number of well-signposted car parks around the city.

Melk

Melk marks the westernmost point of the Wachau Valley, Austria’s most picturesque stretch of the Danube, surrounded by forests and ancient forts. The small, historic town has lots of 16th and 17th century buildings and an 18th century abbey to explore. In the local region there are many walking and cycling routes along the river, Danube cruises and local wineries to visit.

Melk is one hour’s drive from Linz Airport taking the 139 south and then the E60 east. There are some park and ride car parks on the outskirts of the town and limited street parking available closer to the centre.

Salzburg

Salzburg is the quintessential Austrian city. Famed for being the birth place of Mozart and the location for the film The Sound of Music, it is a beautiful place in which to spend a day or two. The city’s old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site full of grand squares, churches and monuments while the cliff top fort imposes its presence from above. On the banks of the Salzach River, Salzburg has plenty of modern attractions too including a vibrant arts scene and nightlife.

Salzburg is 75 minutes’ drive from Linz Airport on the 139 south and then E60 west. Driving around the city is not particularly easy as road names are notoriously difficult to read and traffic can be bad. Making use of the city’s park and ride system, with numerous car parks outside the city gates, is recommended.
