Where to hire a car at Grand Rapids Airport
A number of car hire companies operate at Grand Rapids Airport including Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Alamo. Their offices can be found on the first level of the airport’s main car park. This is just opposite the terminal building.
Broadmoor Rent-A-Car also provide a car hire service from the airport. They offer a meet and greet service where they collect passengers from the airport and transport them to their local office. Passengers can either call the company directly upon arrival or use the Ground Transportation Phone Board located opposite the baggage reclaim area.

The closest petrol station to Grand Rapids Airport is an Allied Brands garage located just off Patterson Avenue South East, south of the airport. It takes just over five minutes to drive from the airport to the petrol station.

Driving around Grand Rapids Airport
From the airport, Patterson Avenue South East runs south towards route 37 and route 6 and north towards route 11 and route 96.
Route 37 heads north along the eastern edge of Grand Rapids city centre and southeast towards Battle Creek. Route 96 goes west towards Muskegon and Lake Michigan and east towards Detroit. Route 11 rings around the southern and western edges of Grand Rapids. Route 6 runs east to west connecting route 196, route 131 and route 96.
Roads around Grand Rapids and Michigan are well-maintained and well-signposted. You’ll need to remember to drive on the right and, when in rural areas, be alert for animals in the road.
Getting to your destination

Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan but still manages to retain a small town charm. It is home to great art galleries, shops, restaurants and nightclubs. Popular attractions include the bustling Downtown Market, the Frederik Mejer Gardens and Sculpture Park, and a number of local craft breweries.
It’s a 20 minute drive from Grand Rapids Airport to Grand Rapids city centre. The most direct route takes route 11 and then route 96. The city is divided into quadrants – NW, NE, SW and SE – which are indicated after road names and can help with navigation. There is usually a good selection of free parking available outside the downtown area. If you’re parking in downtown, you’ll need to pay. However, the majority of spaces are free of charge after 6pm on weekdays and at weekends.
Saugatuck is a small town sitting on Kalamazoo River. It’s also just a stone’s throw from Lake Michigan. The town is part of the “Art Coast” of Michigan and there are a number of galleries and artists’ workshops to visit. Also in the area, there are plenty of outdoor adventure activities on the water and a few wineries which do tours and tastings.
Saugatuck is 45 minutes’ drive from Grand Rapids Airport, taking route 6 and then route 196 southwest. It’s a small place laid out over the grid system, with the lake as a useful reference point for navigation. There are plenty of parking spaces around town too.
Manistee sits between Lake Michigan and Manistee Lake. It’s a small town with Victorian features, beautiful beaches and some great fishing spots too. Visitors can wander around the quaint downtown or head to one of the town’s museums to learn more about its history. The Manistee National Forest is also nearby and guided tours can be arranged.
Manistee is around two hours’ drive from Grand Rapids Airport. Drivers should take route 11, route 96 and then route 31 north up the coast of Lake Michigan. All of Manistee’s east west streets are numbered and all its north south streets are named.
