The city of Clermont-Ferrand is the capital of the Auvergne region. It is sandwiched between two national parks, one of which is made up of a chain of volcanoes. The tallest of these volcanoes, Puy-de-Dome dominates the skyline of the city. Clermont-Fernand is also home to an impressive cathedral and the Roman ruins of Notre-Dame-du-Port Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Clermont-Ferrand is just 15 minutes’ drive from Clermont-Ferrand Airport, taking the A71 south and then picking up the D766 into the city centre.
There is lots of paid parking in the city centre and free options on the outskirts. A drive up to the top of the Puy-de-Dome volcano for the views will cost you a few euros on the toll road.
The spa town of Vichy is a quaint and charming destination. Sitting alongside the River Allier, the town is home to stunning architecture, a historic opera house and a variety of spas offering beauty and relaxation treatments. Vichy has a good variety of town centre car parks. It is around 50 minutes’ drive from Clermont-Ferrand Airport on the A71 north and then the A719 east.
Le Puy-en-Velay is an ancient town set amongst a dramatic landscape of volcanoes. It’s famous as the start of the pilgrimage that takes travellers all the way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Its cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site although it’s most striking feature is the Chapel Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe, built in the 10th century atop a steep rocky spire.
Le Puy-en-Velay is an hour and 30 minutes away from Clermont-Ferrand Airport. Drivers can take the 175 south and then pick up the N102 which heads straight for the town.
