Ulaanbaatar Airport

The Chinggis Khaan International Airport (ULN) is the key international gateway into Mongolia, and is situated in its capital city of Ulaanbaatar. Established in 1957, this airport has been essential to connecting this nation to the rest of the world, and as the years have gone by, has seen an increase of passengers, currently totalling one million passengers annually.  If you are looking to explore Mongolia, or fancy flying to other exciting destinations, this is the port to do it from.

The airport is located 12km from the centre of the city, and is linked with a few transportation options. The facilities aren’t vast, but you will have access to the most important amenities needed whilst in transit.

There is a wireless internet connection that is free of charge, and there are a couple of mobile phone companies where you can organise a temporary plan if you are staying in the city for a while. There are several ATMs where you can take out money in the local currency.

There is one main restaurant in the airport, so if you’re really hungry you can dine here, or wait until you reach your destination point. However, there are a few duty free shops where you can buy the standard goods like tobacco, alcohol and cosmetics, but you can also find items like local souvenirs and gifts. There are domestic and international VIP lounges, as well as a medical service that is open 24 hours a day.

Flights from this airport are mainly operated by Turkish Airlines, Air China, Korean Air, MIAT, Aeroflot, Aero Mongolia, Hunnu Air, and Air Busan.

Travel Information

·         The drive is 20 minutes long, over a distance of 12km, and is pretty straightforward. You need to get onto the Airport Road, and stay on this until you come to a roundabout, and take your first exit into the city. Car rental agencies operate out of this airport and offer vehicles with or without a driver, though you can also book services online with Skyscanner's search tools.

·         Buses do run between airport and city, though these do not run 24/7, and can be a little confusing, though look for bus M11 for the central Ulaanbaatar. ($24).

·         Taxis don’t always have a meter, or sometimes the drivers won’t turn one on, if you pick up a taxi from the airport, make sure the meter is on, or you agree a price beforehand. There are private airport transfers available for various prices; with Skyscanner’s search tool, you can book the one that best suits your budget.
