Discover Edmonton International
Although not as well-known as other big cities in Canada, Edmonton is a delightful place to be due to its natural and cultural destinations. One can get here through Edmonton International Airport, the primary passenger and cargo facility in the Canadian province of Alberta. It is a hub for Northern Alberta and Northern Canada flights, providing regular scheduled trips to and from over 50 destinations in Canada, United States, and Europe.
Being the largest and fifth busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic in Canada to date, Edmonton International Airport makes a convenient port of entry in the region. It is around 26 kilometres away from downtown Edmonton. Its two runways also measure about 10,995 feet and 10,200 feet long respectively, which allow large-sized planes to land from their designated routes.
What to see & do
Edmonton, known as Canada's Festival City, is the place to be when one is out to celebrate something. Arts, food, wine, and culture, dragon boats, and accordions are commonly featured in its special events that number more than 50 per year. For those who are exploring the city, one can turn to the historical Old Strathcona district where there are various galleries, shops, restaurants, and clubs.
There is also the Art Gallery of Alberta to check out, a futuristic structure housing around 6,000 pieces of historical and contemporary art, a 150-seat theatre, as well as a shop, and restaurant. The Royal Alberta Museum is also a major attraction, as it is known for its enormous collection of insects and a display on the aboriginal culture in Alberta. The Wild Alberta gallery is also well featured here, where visitors can look at displays of plants and animals from each geographical zone of the province.
Tourists who want to escape the bustle of the city without leaving it can turn to any of the 22 major parks making up Edmonton's ribbon of green stretching along the North Saskatchewan River. One of the parks named after the river is located within an interconnected riverside green belt that seemingly cuts Edmonton in half. Lakes, bridges, wild areas, ravines, and golf courses are scattered across the green zone, which can be accessed by the cycling and walking trails from downtown.
The Muttart Conservatory is another delightful landmark, which looks unique due to its pyramid-shaped glass structure. This botanical garden was established at the south of the river off James MacDonald Bridge. Each of the four pyramids here has a different climate region and corresponding foliage, which makes it interesting to check out.
The TELUS World of Science is also a landmark not to be missed, as one can behold here the stunning beauty of the aurora borealis in the dome theatre. For day trips, tourists can go on to the Elk Island National Park, a sanctuary of aspen parkland. The main attraction here is the bison that roam the park. Camping in the summer and cross-country skiing in winter are also fun activities here. Those out to learn more from an excursion can venture to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, just 25 minutes from the city. It is an open-air museum where costumed role-players recreate the life of early Ukrainian pioneers settled in the east-central Alberta area from 1892 to 1930.
