Discover Learmonth

RAAF Learmonth is a joint-use Royal Australian Air Force base and civil airport also known by the name Learmonth Airport. It is one of the RAAF's three "bare bases," which means that it was developed in order to support the RAAF's capability to conduct combat operations from the Australian mainland. There are no Air Force units based at Learmonth, but it is maintained by a small caretaker staff.

RAAF Learmonth is located near the town of Exmouth, on the tip of the North West Cape in Western Australia. Flights to Exmouth have their arrival port at Learmonth and Exmouth then is around 35 kms (just under 30 minutes) by road. The other two bare bases are RAAF Scherger, near Weipa, Queensland, and RAAF Curtin near Derby, Western Australia.

Ningaloo Coast

Near Exmouth is Ningaloo Coast, a World Heritage Site with an area of over 705,015 hectares in the northwest coastal region. National parks and reserves included in the World Heritage area are Bundegi Coastal Park, Cape Range National Park, Jurabi Coastal Park, Ningaloo Marine Park (Commonwealth Waters) and Ningaloo Marine Park (State Waters). Perhaps the coast's most notable feature is the Ningaloo Reef. Ningaloo Reef fringes the coast at 260 km long. It is the largest fringing coral reef in Australia, and the sole large reef situated very near a landmass. The reef is rich in coral and other marine life. It is also known as a feeding site of whale sharks from March to June, and for being part of the migratory routes for dugongs, dolphins, manta rays, and humpback whales during the winter. In addition, the beaches of the reef serve as breeding grounds for loggerhead, green, and hawksbill turtles. So, hop on to a flight to Exmouth and enjoy true nature.

Cape Range National Park

Cape Range National Park encompasses the western side of the North West Cape peninsula, occupying an area of over 47,655 hectares. The nearest town is Exmouth. Its most notable features include over 700 caves and perhaps several others that remain undiscovered, and over 630 pieces of wildflower such as the Bird Flower and the Desert Sturt Pea. Various flora species are present in the park, including mangroves, grevillea, eucalyptus, minilya lily, and acacia. Fauna within the park include red kangaroos, emus, rock wallabies, about 100 species of birds, and 80 species of reptiles.

Exmouth Beaches

Exmouth's coastline has plenty of beaches where visitors can go swimming, sunbathing, snorkelling, fishing, or other water sports. The closes beach to the town is Town Beach. Other places to try include Bundegi Beach, Lighthouse Bay, Jurabi Coastal Reserve, Mauritius Beach, and Turquoise Bay.

Vlamingh Head Lighthouse

The lighthouse is located 17 km north of Exmouth, on the tip of the Cape Range, overlooking Lighthouse Bay. The Vlamingh Head Lighthouse is known as one of the few places in the country where you can watch the sun rise and set.

How to get around within Exmouth

Exmouth is small and can be navigated on foot, but be prepared to do a lot of walking as the town are fairly spread out. Instead, you might want to try renting a car instead. Not only will it be very convenient and comfortable, it will also allow you to get around to the attractions located just outside of town.
