Car Hire from Learmonth Airport

Car Hire from Learmonth Airport

Learmonth Airport is the main airport servicing the town of Exmouth and the north-westernmost tip of Western Australia. Hiring a car from Learmonth Airport is one of the only ways to get around in this remote part of the country and gives you the freedom to explore its beautiful beaches, national parks and sleepy towns.

Where to hire a car at Learmonth Airport

Europcar, Hertz, Avis and Budget all offer car hire services from Learmonth Airport. The car hire offices can be found in the car park, behind the long term parking section. There is a walkway leading from the main terminal building to the car hire location.

Driving around Learmonth Airport

Learmonth Airport sits on the Minilya-Exmouth Road, the main route north to Exmouth and south towards Minilya. Southbound it connects to route 1, Western Australia’s primary highway. Heading east along the coast you’ll come to Port Hedland and Fitzroy Crossing before reaching the border with the Northern Territory, while heading south route 1 goes all the way to Perth.

When you’re driving around Western Australia you’ll be covering vast distances to get from one town to the next. As a result, you need to keep your wits about you and follow the region’s own set of driving guidelines to get around safely.

You should always carry enough provisions to last a few days. This includes four to five litres of water per person and food in case you find yourself stranded with a broken down car waiting for either phone signal or another vehicle to materialise. In such a situation, the region’s road safety bodies advise that you stay with your car, as a vehicle is much easier to spot than a person.

To avoid getting caught stranded to begin with, you’ll need a spare canister of petrol, a spare tyre and tools to change a tyre. You’ll also need to take regular rest stops and keep an eye out for animals on the road, particularly kangaroos at sunset.

Getting to your destination

Learmonth Airport sits in the north western corner of Western Australia and offers easy access to a number of great destinations. Here are just a few of them:

Exmouth acts as a gateway from which to explore the rich local landscape. It’s a small town with a handful of shops, restaurants and coffee shops. Located close to the coast, there is some great seafood available in the town, a number of shops where you can buy diving equipment and several small pubs. Accommodation options include hotels, villas and campsites.

Exmouth is around 30 minutes’ drive from Learmonth Airport, taking Minilya-Exmouth Road north. The town is small so traffic is minimal and it’s easy to find your way around. There’s also a good selection of parking available around the town.

Coral Bay

The beautiful beaches of Coral Bay provide a gateway to the Ningaloo Marine Park, an incredible location for scuba diving and snorkelling. There are lots of tours available from Coral Bay. These include glass bottom boat tours, whale watching excursions and guided snorkelling adventures to see whale sharks or manta ray. Visitors can also spend the day fishing or sailing along this beautiful stretch of coastline.

Coral Bay is an hour and 40 minutes’ drive from Learmonth Airport. Drivers should take Minilya-Exmouth Road south before branching off onto Coral Bay Road. The small village has just a few roads, very little traffic and lots of places to park.

Cape Range National Park

Cape Range National Park is home to limestone mountains, deep canyons and beautiful, secluded beaches. Wildlife in the park includes emus, lizards, wallabies and red kangaroos. Visitors can walk hiking trails, discover the park’s many caves, go on wildlife spotting excursions or just soak up the sun at one of the park’s beaches.

It takes around an hour to reach Cape Range National Park from Learmonth Airport, taking Minilya-Exmouth Road north through Exmouth before looping around on the coastal road. There tends to be a lot of wildlife on the road through the national park, so you should drive slowly and carefully. For this reason, it’s also advisable not to drive through the park at dawn, dusk or at night in order to protect the wildlife and your car.
