Why visit São Paulo?

São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil, and it’s easy to understand why. Whilst not as beautiful as Rio, nor as flashy as Brasilia, São Paulo is perhaps the most livable of the three. With a culinary scene to die for, a thumping nightlife, a thriving and cutting edge theatrical, arts and music culture, this is a place to really get to grips with the modern face of Brazil.

Things to do in São Paulo

First things first in this city of culture; catch a world-class performance in the City Theatre, peruse the works of masters like Picasso, Van Gogh and Matisse in the São Paulo Museum of Art, then browse modern pieces in the Contemporary Art Museum.

If the day is pleasant, wander through the beautifully landscaped Parque de Ibirapuera, where you can wander past lakes, trails, gardens, and visit the Museu Afro Brasil, an astounding collection of art and artefacts charting the history of Africans in Brazil.

Then enjoy the city’s many landmarks, from the neo-Gothic São Paulo Cathedral, the City Hall, the Municipal Library, Republic Square and the Chá Bridge.

For those wanting to get into the urban lifestyle of São Paulo, find your way to Benedito Calixto Square, that on the weekend sees hundreds of vendors selling everything from antiques to furniture and arts and crafts. There are food stalls selling Brazilian staples, and often live music playing. If you have time, also drop into Liberdade, a Japanese-Brazilian neighbourhood where you can enjoy some of the city’s finest, sushi, ramen and karaoke.
