Why visit Bristol?
Bristol is the largest city on the western coastline of England, but has maintained its West Country charm despite its size. As an important player in British history, you will find this city replete with cultural attractions that range from its Roman roots, its role as a medieval port, and its continuing part in the shipping and trade industry. Visiting Bristol will give you the opportunity to wander through its many museums, book tickets to a show or a concert at one of its excellent venues, look off the starboard bow of the SS Great Britain, and see original Bansky art scrawled on the walls of this great city.
Things to do in Bristol
Learn about the city of Bristol in the vaunted Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery. Set in a beautiful neoclassical building, you can enjoy the exhibitions on natural history, local culture, and see artworks collected from all over the world. Then go on a bit of an ecclesiastical tour, as Bristol isn’t short on churches; see its most famous structures, the Gothic Bristol Cathedral, and St. Mary Radcliffe.
Then see the city’s heritage writ all over its streets, by touring Castle Park, where the remains of the city’s medieval castle sits beside St. Peter’s church, and the bustling harbourside of Bristol. You’re also really close to the popular shopping district here, so you can browse the local shops and give your credit card a work out too.
If you spend a little time wandering the harbourside, you must find your way to the moored Brunel’s SS Great Britain, a steamship that you can board and explore, one of the city’s finest attractions. Then you must stroll over to the Avon Gorge, and see the impressive Clifton Suspension Bridge, an iconic landmark of the city.
Then enjoy a few short day trips around Bristol, such as the stunning 12th century Berkley Castle, where Edward the 2nd was murdered in 1327. Don’t worry though, today besieging forces are laid to rest, and the only thing you need worry about is how to find the Tea Rooms.
