I loved Maputo. It won't appeal to many people but it is my favorite city so far in sub-Saharan Africa. There is grit and corruption but its seaside location, fascinating history, good architecture, delicious fusion cuisine and cultural diversity make it really special. It isn't as beautiful as Cape Town but it has a depth and cultural complexity that I found far more enthralling.

Read about my perception of the city here: Maputo has been cool for years now, but for most, it will be too expensive for them before they even hear about it. Basic hotels in the capital already charge about US$ 200 a night. The prices in Maputo are now just as likely to bring tears as the poverty.

Maputo is a classic travel waystation, the kind of place you visit en route to somewhere else. It's low on sights of tourist interest (the train station might be pretty, but the surrounding areas of the baixa are anything but), and with a certain amount of crime (taxis after dark are a good idea), it can be hard to really enjoy your time here. That said, the Mozambican capital DOES have some great restaurants and cool nightclubs, and a passable stretch of beach up north, so if you find yourself marooned here for a few days (most visitors to Mozambique do), take heart.
