Kansas City, also known as K.C., is the largest city in the U.S. state of Missouri and is the central city of the Kansas City metropolitan area. It is located on Missouri's western border, with downtown near the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. Other nicknames given to the city are "KCMO," the "City of Fountains," and the "Heart of America." Kansas City is one of the two county seats of Jackson County, the other being Independence.

Kansas City is home of Kansas City jazz and Kansas City blues, which originated from the 18th and Vine Neighborhood. It is also known for its barbecue (more than 100 barbecue joints across the city) and fountains (there are more than 200).

How to get around within Kansas City

Navigating around Kansas City can be easily done by car, the most preferred method here since traffic is relatively light and parking is not difficult. Several highways into and out of the city make Kansas City very accessible. Getting around by bicycle is also a great way to explore the city, not to mention, a healthy one. There’s a Bike KC program implemented that will add 600 miles of bicycle paths in the metropolitan area, as well as bike racks on buses. There’s public transportation available, although this is fairly limited. MAX (Metro Area Express), a new bus system is put into place to speed up commutes, but most of public transportation function to aid easing up commute traffic and is not the best option for travellers who wanted to explore the sights (there are plenty of car rental services available throughout the city).

How to get there

Getting into Kansas City by plane is possible through Kansas City International Airport, which is located 15 miles (24 km) northwest of downtown Kansas City, in Platte County. Major carriers are Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines. The #129 bus, called the I-29 Express, which is operated by the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, offers hourly service to and from the airport. The KCO Shuttle also plies between the airport and downtown hotels. There’s also Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, which serves smaller planes. Other ways of getting in include by train (Amtrak), by car (via Interstate 435, I-70, I-35, and US Highway 71), and by bus (Greyhound, Megabus, and other commercial coach service companies).
