Discover Suva

Suva (SUV)

Fly to Suva, the laid back and beautiful city on Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu.

Nausori International Airport (SUV)

Nausori International Airport is one of the major airports in Fiji. It is only 30 minutes outside of the capital city of Suva, and is the second international airport on the mainland. It is not as large or as well-equipped as its sister airport of Nadi International Airport (NAN), but it does facilitate much easier access to Suva itself.

Airlines that fly to Suva

Most of the airlines that fly to Suva are operated by Qantas, Air Pacific, Cathay Pacific and Air Niugini. If you are flying from Australia or New Zealand then Qantas is the major operator to this airport.

Getting into Suva

By taxi

There are taxis outside the airport that can take you to Suva city centre for about 25FJD ($16), and the journey takes around 35 minutes.

By public transportation

There are lots of public bus options on the mainland, and every single town has a stop. These are usually cheap and cheerful, and a good way to meet the locals. However, if you are travelling with a tour company there may be air-conditioned coaches that they can organise on your behalf.

By car

You can hire a car at SUV airport, where you can find reliable brands operating car rental desks. If you’d rather book an advance, you can use our handy car hire search tool.

What can you do in Suva?

There is much to see and do in this delightful capital city of Fiji. Located on the southeast coast of the mainland called Viti Levu, the city of Suva juts out on a peninsula, giving it wonderful views of both Laucala Bay and Suva Harbour.

Touring this town is a great way to learn about the culture and heritage of the Fijian people. Head into the Fiji Museum which has the largest collection of historical artefacts that relate to this island and its inhabitants. After the galleries you can wander through the beautiful Thurston Gardens, the original site where the Suva was first settled.

Then head down to the Municipal Market to get a feel for local life on the island, here you can pick up local fruits and vegetables as well as Indian spices and snacks. Or go shopping down Cumming Street, where you can find lots of boutiques huddled in amongst fine restaurants.

Outside the city there is the incredible Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, a dense rainforest that is home to a variety of unique animals, and perfect for a day outdoors. However, if you want to investigate the beaches that Fiji is so famous for, you have to drive a ways out of the city. Driving out west, around 45 minutes will take you to the end of the Coral Coast of Fiji, where you can find some of the most beautiful beaches on this island.

When should you go?

The best time to visit this island is generally during its dry season: June-September, where you can expect temperatures of around 20-30°C and a decent amount of tourists. If you’re wanting to skip the crowds, but still don’t fancy being poured on, you can head to Fiji in the shoulder month of May which sees the temperature lower, and the prices come down. This time of the year has mostly dry days, however, it is more likely you’ll come across the odd rainfall. November through to April is the rainy season and this is best avoided.
