What can you do in Porto Alegre?

Established in 1769 by a man called Manuel Sepúlveda, Porto Alegre has since grown to be one of the largest cities in Brazil. This is a city whose inhabitants enjoy a wonderful cultural and foodie scene, which is offered up with aplomb to guests of their town.

Start your city tour at the Monumento a Castelo Branco in the pretty Parque Moinhos de Vento, where this uncompromising piece of art serves as a stark reminder of the military dictator, Castelo Branco, who once ruled Brazil. Then stroll down to where the old windmills, primarily used in the 19th century, once stood. See the replica of the original model that has been transformed into a children’s library.

Then wander into the Old City, where you can see the town’s historic Portuguese past and see the Praça da Matriz, as well as the important buildings that radiate from that square, such as the Piratiny Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the House of Justice.

If you like the outdoors, it’s worth going to Lake Guaíba and watching the sun set over the water, or see the city by hopping on a boat that cruises around the lake, a fantastic way to get a grip on your surrounds.

When should you go?

Porto Alegre has a subtropical climate, so though the temperatures tend to be mild, this is a fairly rainy part of the world and it is advised you pack a waterproof. Expect the hotter months of November through to March to stay above 28°C, and the colder seasons of May to August to average around 20°C.
