Discover New York LaGuardia

LaGuardia Airport, one of the major ports of entry in the state of New York, makes the city accessible from various parts of the United States. It is a hub for Delta Air Lines, which allow the airport to handle around 25 million passengers per year. Upon landing, travellers can venture to any of the four terminals catered to by buses and walkways.

This number of passengers can be overwhelming, given the small area occupied by LaGuardia Airport. Its facilities are additionally outdated, but are on the way of getting addressed with planned renovations. A new control tower became operational in 2010, with parts of the terminal to be soon remodelled to accommodate the present number of passengers.

Food is also a marvellous bounty here, with various options catering to a large number of tastes and preferences. Multicultural neighbourhoods can also be found in New York, which make it an interesting place to check out. Tourists can start with visiting the Empire State Building, one of the most iconic structures in the United States. Getting here very early or very late is important, though, as the lines to the observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors take too long. There is also the Metropolitan Museum of Art to turn to, which features a permanent collection of more than two million objects, from Egyptian temples to American paintings. Known colloquially as the 'Met', the museum has 17 acres of galleries, making it necessary to schedule at least three days to fully appreciate its contents.

Other places to check out should include Ellis Island, which was the main immigration station of New York from 1892 until 1954. Those going now will find a modern and clean version of the historic new-arrival experience due to the impressive Immigration Museum. The National Museum of the American Indian is also a major attraction. It is housed in one of the city's finest beaux arts buildings. The vast elliptical rotunda and the sleek galleries feature changing exhibitions on Native American art, culture, life, and beliefs. The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is not to be missed as well, as one will find here over 50,000 works of both home-grown and international artists. Lectures, film screenings, and performances on various related themes can also be enjoyed here.

Other than the cultural landmarks, one can also visit in New York several churches such as St Patrick's Cathedral. Its neo-Gothic splendour is breathtaking to behold with its Louis Tiffany-designed altar, the stunning Rose Window, and a 7,000-pipe church organ. A basement crypt is also located here, which contains the remains of every New York cardinal and Pierre Touissant, an African-American champion of the poor. There is also Grace Church to see, which fascinates with its Gothic Revival design. This Episcopal church has elaborate carvings, a towering spire, and a well-groomed yard to check out.
