Kathmandu is the largest city and capital of Nepal. It serves as a hub for independent travellers and is a flourishing tourist destination. It is the best spot to start your adventure in Nepal, offering various areas that are perfect for trekking, rafting, jungle adventures, bungee jumping, and more extreme sports. Kathmandu Valley in particular has several excellent trails for trekking and also offers spectacular views from atop the hill. Visit Swayambhu (also known as Monkey Temple) to see its large stupa, as well as other Buddhist and Hindu iconography. It is one of Nepal’s most sacred Buddhist sites. Meanwhile, another sacred site is the Boudha Stupa, especially for Tibetan Buddhists. It is also one of the largest in the world. Narayanhiti Palace Museum was previously used as the Riyal palace, and later turned into a museum and partly into the Foreign Ministry. There’s also the Budda Neelkanth Temple, which houses an Idol of Bhagwan Vishnu in a sleeping position and surrounded by water. Another temple worth visiting is the Pashupatinath, a significant Hindu temple to Shiva, in the form of Lord of Animals. Relax in the Garden of Dreams / Kaiser Mahal. You can find several other temples, as well as palaces, at the ancient Kathmandu Durbar Square. Don’t miss one of the many festivities in Nepal, which are often held in the city. There’s the five-day Tihar, Festival of Lights around October, Bikram Sambat's New Year's in April, the Teej women’s festival, the eight-day Indra Jatra Harvest festival in September, the Himalayan Blues Festival, which features musicians from all over the world, and the national/religious Dashain festival.
