Why visit Dunedin?

Victorian Dunedin is one of New Zealand’s largest cities, and is known for its whisky, for its university, and for its striking resemblance to Scotland’s Edinburgh. A charming little city, with great cultural attractions, a good nightlife, and a swell cuisine, you will find more than enough to keep you occupied during your stay. Added to that, this city is located in the Otago Peninsula, making Dunedin ideally placed for anyone looking to explore the glorious scenery of the South Island.

Things to do in Dunedin

Explore the city on foot, and you will find a number of excellent heritage attractions, such as the Olveston Historic Home—an example of Edwardian life, the Railway Station, the Dunedin Prison, and the First Church of Otago. There is also the unusual Victorian Larnach Castle, the only castle in the entire country!

After you’ve had your fill of colonial architecture, visit the Otago Museum, which takes an in-depth look at the indigenous cultures of New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. Then for something a little off-beat, tour the local Speight’s Brewery, which has been brewing ale since the 1800s.

Lastly, strike out of the city limits and take advantage of the spectacular scenery by taking a boat tour out on the water for a chance to see seals, dolphins, and cheeky penguins. Or head out to the tip of the peninsula to Taiaroa Head and visit the Royal Albatross Observatory, where keen bird-watchers will be able to see the breeding grounds of these spectacular animals.
