Bordeaux Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Bordeaux-Bazas within Bordeaux. As a Roman Catholic cathedral, it was consecrated by Pope Urban II in 1096. Another stop is the separate bell tower within the grounds, beside the cathedral also known as the Tour Pey-Berland. The cathedral houses the Marcadé collection, which consists of 42 illuminations, as well as paintings, sculptures, liturgical vestments, and silver objects, among others. Lascaux, or the Lascaux Caves, is known for its Paleolithic cave painting estimated at around 17,300 years old. Designated in 1979 as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it has around 2,000 figures, divided into over 900 animals, and 605 others, in addition to 364 equines and 90 stags.

 

How to get around within Aquitaine

Travelling within Bordeaux can be done by bus, electric bus and tramway, as well as ferry. The city’s bus network makes it possible to take the buses to almost every destination within Bordeaux. Buses include ones by Gare Saint-Jean, Place de la Victoire, Place Gambetta, and Quinconces. Lastly, it is not recommended to take a car in this big city. When within Bordeaux, it can be quite a hassle to find a place to park, and the car park areas can also be quite expensive. Not to mention, heavy traffic within the city is common due to its narrow streets. Getting around by electric bus and tramway is possible via a new tramway service, which provides rides to Garonne via Pont de Pierre. Electric buses, on the other hand, are the only public transportation available on pedestrian roads. The new tramway system has no overhead wires, while the electric buses has no bus stops. Passengers and travellers can just hail a bus by waving a hand to the driver. Ideally, the driver will stop the bus and will load the passenger/s, unloading however is done by letting the driver know that you want to get off. The ferry service within Bordeaux, also known as Le Bus du Fleuve, provides a link to the western and eastern parts of the city via a small cruise via the river. The standard bus ticket can be used when getting on the ferries.
