      FAQs about Colombia holidays

Colombia is a great destination to visit on a budget. You’ll find a variety of affordable accommodation options and attractions in most cities and regions. But a little extra cash does allow for more comfort, especially with long-haul bus travel and organised tours.
First-time visitors should beeline to the coast, staying in either the historic seaside city of Cartagena or the gateway to adventure, Santa Marta. To soak in busy city life, head for the bustling capital of Bogota.
The best time to visit Colombia depends on where you plan to go. If you’re heading to the central and eastern mountain ranges to explore cities like Medellin and Bogota, then you’re in luck. The weather tends to be temperate throughout the year. Cartagena can get quite hot, except from December to April, when you’ll also see less rain.
Consult your government for travel advisories in Colombia. Be sure to tuck away your valuables when travelling in the bigger cities, and avoid walking the streets alone at night. When visiting the Andes, take it slow and drink lots of water to avoid altitude sickness.
Spanish is the national language of Colombia, but you’ll hear different dialects depending on where you travel. And it’s not uncommon to hear locals in the larger cities speaking English. Colombia is a polite country, so ‘por favor’ (please) and ‘gracias’ (thank you) go a long way.
You’ll use Colombian pesos ($) here. Banks and ATMs are easily accessible in cities, and major credit cards are accepted in most tourist areas. Tourists don’t have to pay the national VAT on hotel stays, so be sure to mention that during check-in. Restaurant servers will ask if you want to include an optional 10% tip.
