Car Rental in Shanghai
This information is correct as of July 2015.
Where to rent a car in Shanghai
Several car rental companies can be found in the central Shanghai business district and its surrounds. Several of them are positioned in the airport as well. Some of the local car rental companies in Shanghai include Shanghai Yunchi Car Rental, Shenzhou Zuche Siping, Shanghai Jiejie Car Rental, Shanghai Tuonia Car Rental, Shundao Car Rental, and several others. There are only a few international companies here, and it is probably better to stick with the local ones to rent for shorter periods, as they can be much cheaper compared to certain international car rental company's price. Upon booking, prepare documents such as identification cards and a China-issued driver's licence. If you do not have a regular China-issued driver's licence or are not a Chinese national, you can arrange for a temporary driver's licence, and should submit to tests to prove eligibility to drive. Book in advance, so that it will not be a hassle, and prepare for the fees and settle them upon arrival to the city or via wire.
What to expect when renting a car from Shanghai
Driving in Shanghai is not very much preferred due to various reasons, including complex systems of roads, perpetual traffic jams, on-going road construction, and driving habits of locals. Parking spaces are also hard to find, and if the person driving doesn't understand Chinese, there is a high probability that the journey would be doubly difficult. However, if you still wish to pursue with renting cars, it is suggested to hire a local driver, preferably one that can speak other languages aside from Chinese. Most car rental companies in Shanghai offer chauffeur-driven car rentals, so make sure to ask about this service. This will give you the advantage and convenience of keeping journeys shorter and a bit easier. If a chauffeur is not available, a reliable English-translated map or GPS system with English/other languages settings can immensely help.
