Driving around the airport is fairly easy going. The roads are small and easy to navigate. The E75 passes near the airport, and this stretch of road is a single-carriageway.
Getting to your destination
If you're visiting Finnish Lapland during the winter it's a good idea to check with your car hire company that tyre chains will be provided.
The capital of Finnish Lapland and the hometown of Santa Claus, Rovaniemi is a fantastic base for exploring the region and maybe catching a glimpse of the elusive northern lights. The city was completely destroyed at the end of WWII and has been rebuilt in the shape of a reindeer's head.
It takes about ten minutes to drive into downtown Rovaniemi from the airport. Parking in the city centre is metered and you can expect to pay about €1.40 (roughly £1) per hour. Parking tickets are transferable, so you can move to another space providing there is still some time left on your original ticket (this doesn't apply to the railway station or airport car parks).
Santa's favourite ski resort, Ounasvaara has some fantastic downhill and cross-country trails. Winter is the high-season for skiing and snowboarding while summer is great for tobogganing and mountain biking.
It takes just over ten minutes to drive to Ounasvaara from Rovaniemi Airport. Most of the hotels and chalets have parking for guests.
Posio is surrounded by beautiful natural sites. It's the perfect base for exploring Riisitunturi National Park, Korouoma Nature Reserve, and Lake Livojarvi. Posio is also home to world's northernmost ceramics factory, Pentik Maki.
If you can't find cheap flights to Kuusamo Airport you can fly to Rovaniemi and drive the rest of the way. It takes about an hour and forty-five minutes to drive to Posio from Rovaniemi Airport. The town and the surrounding area is quite rural, and visitors are expected to have a car. As a result parking is ample and the majority of hotels and other accommodation options in the area have parking lots.
