Where to hire a car at Hannover Airport
The car hire desks can be found on the ground floor of the building, between terminals A and B. Avis, Enterprise, Euromobil, Europcar, Hertz, Dollar, Thrifty and Sixt all offer car rental from Hannover Airport.
Petrol stations near Hannover Airport
Depending on your car rental agreement, you may need to hand your car back with a full tank.
The M1 petrol station on Flughafenstrasse is just outside the airport, and is the most convenient place to top up your tank.
Driving around Hannover Airport
The airport connects onto the Bundesautobahn 352, a spur road linking the airport to the A7 and A2 autobahns. The A2 runs from Oberhausen in the west to Berlin in the east, while the A7 runs from north to south between the borders with Denmark and Austria. All of these roads are fast and busy, so be prepared to hit traffic almost as soon as picking up your hire car.
Getting to your destination
Thanks to the CeBIT computer expo, Hannover is officially one of Europe’s geekiest destinations. The city also has plenty of leafy parks to relax in, and an atmospheric ‘old town’ which was fully reconstructed after WWII.
It takes about 20 minutes to drive into downtown Hannover from the airport. On-street parking in the centre of town is restricted between 9am and 7pm, with a maximum stay of two and a half hours. It costs 90c (about 64p) to park for half an hour. If you need to leave your car for longer, leave it in a car park. Here you can expect to pay €1.20-2 (about 85p- £1.43) per hour. If you’re staying overnight the best option is to look for hotels in Hannover with guest parking.
Half timbered houses and an impressive Ducal palace: Celle is storybook Germany at its finest.
It takes just over half an hour to drive to Celle from Hannover Airport. Lots of hotels in Celle offer free car parking for their guests. You can also find parking lots on Hafenstrasse (near the Garnison Museum) and in shopping centres like Karstadt.
Boasting a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list, Quedlinburg is one of the finest medieval renaissance towns in Europe. It makes the perfect base for exploring the Harz Mountains National Park.
It takes about an hour and 25 minutes to drive to Quedlinburg from Hannover Airport. Most hotels and restaurants have car parking available for guests.
