Petrol stations near George Airport
If you select a 'full to full' car rental agreement you will need to hand your car back with a full tank.
There are lots of petrol stations in the town of George, just a few minutes away from the airport. The most convenient ones are just off the main road, York Street, which eventually turns into the R102 towards the airport.
Driving around George Airport
The N2 highway, which runs along the Indian Ocean coastline, is just a few minutes' drive from the airport. Traffic in South Africa drives on the left, just like in Britain, so that's one less thing to get used to during your self-drive holiday. Most of the roads around the airport are easy to manage, but it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with the vehicle before leaving the car park. If you're planning on visiting any remote towns or countryside attractions, we recommend selecting a package that includes a sat-nav system.
Getting to your destination
Right at the heart of the garden route, there are plenty of excellent places to visit when you hire a car at George Airport.
This sleepy town is popular for one simple reason: golf. Three of South Africa's best golf courses are in the area. There's also some fantastic hiking and mountain biking to be found in the nearby Outeniqua Mountains.
It only takes 10 minutes to drive into George from the airport. Most of the accommodation on offer in the town has guest parking, but really it's such a sleepy little place that you can practically park anywhere. A car is absolutely essential, especially if you want to visit the Garden Route's spectacular beaches or go exploring the mountain trails.
One of the most popular stops on the Garden Route, and for good reason, Knysna is famous for its beautiful scenery and delectable oysters.
It takes about 50 minutes to drive to Knysna from George Airport. Most of the hotels in the area have car parking, and you will need your own vehicle to access the forest hiking trails.
A vibrant seaside town with plenty of gorgeous beaches and a sizzling nightlife, Plettenberg Bay is one of the Garden Route's most exciting destinations.
It takes about an hour and 20 minutes to drive to Plettenberg Bay from George Airport. During the summer it can be tricky to find a parking space as the town becomes very busy, but most hotels and B&Bs in the area have their own car parks.
