The Virgin Islands of the United States, formerly the Danish West Indies, are the western islands of the island group Virgin Islands, between the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Also known as the United States Virgin Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, American Virgin Islands, or USVI, it is one of five inhabited insular areas of the United States, the others being American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, and Puerto Rico. USVI consists of several islands, the main ones being St. Croix, St. John, and St. Thomas. The territory occupies a total land area of 346.4 km2. The capital is Charlotte Amalie, located on Saint Thomas.

What to see & do

Virgin Islands National Park - The Virgin Islands National Park is a United States National Park. It takes up approximately 60% of Saint John and nearly all of Hassel Island. Tourists come for the stunningly beautiful beaches, excellent scuba diving and snorkelling, as well as the hiking trails through the tropical rainforest. The most popular beach is Trunk Bay, while the most popular hike is the Reef Bay Trail. There is a Visitor Center in Cruz Bay, with exhibits on natural and cultural resources, the cultural history of the area, and artefacts from the pre-Columbian Tainos. The park can be reached by ferry.

Buck Island Reef National Monument - Buck Island Reef National Monument, or Buck Island, is a small, uninhabited island about 176 acres, lying 2.4 km north of the northeast coast of Saint Croix. Much of the monument area is underwater, with a 4,554-acre long reef that is paradise for snorkellers and scuba divers.

Water Island Monday Movie Night - Water Island is a short ferry ride away from St. Thomas. Heidi's Honeymoon Grill has a program called Monday Night Movies, wherein films are showed on a screen suspended between coconut trees.

How to get around within the U.S. Virgin Islands

Travelling within the U.S. Virgin Islands is easy. Taxi and bus service are both readily available. The rates for both are regulated. However, taking a taxi when you are in a large group can be expensive, as taxis rates are charged per person. For example, if the cost from one destination to another is $10 and there are four passengers, the total fare will be $40. It would be more economical for groups to rent a car instead.

Those who really want to explore the islands extensively or prefer independent travelling are also recommended to rent vehicles from car rental agencies. Driving around the islands of USVI is easy, and any of the major destinations have coloured directional signs leading up to them. Remember that many unpaved mountain roads require a 4WD.
