Discover Recife

Recife is located where the Beberibe River meets the Capibaribe River before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. It is known for being a major port on the Atlantic Ocean. Recife has many rivers, small islands and plentiful bridges, characterizing its geography, and is reflective of being named as the “Brazilian Venice”. The main tourist district can be found in the South of the City around Boa Viagem beach, which is conveniently close to the airport. The city centre with its historic buildings, bridges, and quaint neighbourhoods is popular among tourists and also a great place for a walking tour. 

 

Airports in Recife

Recife is served by the Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre International Airport (REC) which connects Recife to several Brazilian destinations and major international cities in Europe, the United States and South America. It is one of the few Brazilian cities with direct flights to the paradise islands of Fernando de Noronha, World Heritage Site since 2001.

You can approach the travel information desk to pick up free maps of the city and get advice on transportation. Most of the dining options are in the airport’s food court, so if you’re hungry before your flight it’s best to eat before going through security.

Airlines that Fly to Recife

There’s a good range of international airlines to Recife, operated by American Airlines from Miami, TAP Portugal from Lisbon, Condor from Frankfurt, and Copa Airlines from Panama City.

From Australia, connecting flights are available to Recife. LAN Airlines, British Airways, Air Canada, Delta, Emirates, Virgin Australia, and Qantas fly from Sydney and Melbourne.

The airport also has a good number of domestic flights, operated by Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, GOL Airlines, and TAM Airlines from most major Brazilian cities including Porto Alegre, Belo Horizonte, and Rio de Janeiro.

By Subway

The fastest way to reach downtown Recife is by using the MetroRec Subway system. The Southern Line ends at the airport (Aeroporto) and goes into Recife.

By Local Bus

There are two bus lines which goes to the airport. Line 033 leaves from outside the terminal building in 20 minutes interval, and takes 15 minutes to reach Boa Viagem or 30 minutes to reach the city centre of Recife. Line 152, 153, 161, and 163 can be taken on the other side of the road, and will all go in the city centre.

By Airport Bus

There is the option of the air conditioned “Aeroporto opcional” bus, which costs R$2.70.

By Taxi

If you don’t want to take public transport, the airport also has taxi alternatives. It costs roughly R$10 from the airport to Boa Viagem, and R$25 to the city centre. It’s always worth asking the taxi driver for an estimate before getting in.
