Two major airports, the Haneda Airport (HND) and the Narita Airport (NRT), serve Tokyo and both are possible entry points for anyone flying from Australia. Haneda Airport is better positioned in the city, only being 14km outside of the centre, and offers a lot of domestic flights that you can also connect to. This airport has all the main amenities that you’ll need whilst transiting, such as free WiFi, ATMs, duty-free stores, restaurants, bars, cafes, and currency exchange counters.

You can make your way into the city using the fast monorail service, or buses. There are also taxis available, and these are set at a rate of about 6000-8000JPY ($72-96) for the 20-40 minute journey into the CBD.

Direct flights from Australia to this airport are run by ANA and Qantas, but you can find connecting flights with Air Canada, United, Korean Air, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Japan Airlines and many more.

Things to do in Tokyo

Delve into Tokyo’s history by heading to Chiyoda and walking the grounds of the Imperial Palace. The palace itself is closed to the public, but the surrounding parks are lovely, and it is definitely worth a stroll. Then head on down to the Tokyo National Museum and learn about the city, and the country’s past in this excellent museum.

If you are interested in seeing some beautiful Japanese architecture, take the time to go to 7^th century Senso-ji Temple. This is one of the city’s most spectacular temples, and its oldest. Make sure you also drop by the Meiji Shrine, which sits in over one hundred acres of forest and parkland in the middle of the city.

When you are done, why not go to Harajuku or the Ginzo District to get a little retail therapy. You can also dip in and out of fancy restaurants or trendy bars that line this neighbourhood. Then sticking to the more modern theme, why not see the National Museum of Nature and Science? Or head to the wonderful Ghibli Museum that holds exhibitions and displays on the most popular animation studio in Japan.

Best time to visit Tokyo

·         September to November is undoubtedly the best time to visit Tokyo. In late November the leaves turn and you will be treated to a delightful red, yellow and orange show of colour. The temperature is also very pleasant around this time of year, when the summer heat starts to cool. Expect highs of 27°C and lows of 10°C.

·         Spring is very pretty too, especially when the blossoms come out. Expect the weather to be a little cooler than autumn, but from March to May expect averages of 15-19°C.

Arriving in Tokyo

·         Sydney (SYD) operates all of the direct flights to Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, but you can find connecting routes through the other cities.
