It is increasingly popular among international visitors, having discovered its charms of the beaches, and spectacular nightlife of the bars and restaurants along the coast. Airports in Fortaleza

Pinto Martins Fortaleza International Airport (FOR) is named for Euclides Pinto Martins, a Ceará-born aviator who was one of the pioneers of the air link between New York and Rio de Janeiro in 1922. Nearly 6 million passengers pass through the airport each year.

The terminal has a good selection of shops and restaurants. There’s a main food court, and a few light dining options in the domestic and international departure lounges. Most of the eateries are open 24 hours a day, but the ones that aren’t do stay open until 10pm.

Airlines that Fly to Fortaleza

Due to its rising popularity as a holiday destination, Fortaleza has good international connections with direct flights to Lisbon, Rome, Amsterdam and Praia.

International carriers flying to Fortaleza include Air Italy from Milan, Alitalia from Rome, Arkefly from Amsterdam, TAP Portugal from Lisbon, and TACV Cabo Verde Airlines from two airports in Cape Verde (Praia and Sal).

From Australia, connecting flights are available to Fortaleza. LAN Airlines, Qatar, Qantas, United, Delta, Emirates, and Virgin Australia fly from Sydney and Melbourne.

The airport also receives a lot of domestic traffic from Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, GOL Airlines, and TAM Airlines.

Getting into Fortaleza

By Local Bus

The airport is only 6km away from downtown and is well connected by bus. The urban bus fares are of good value at R$2 during the week with the exception for Sunday which is R$1.40.

From the airport you can catch Line 404, which stops at the bus station and the city centre. The bus runs from 5:10am until 10pm. Bus Line 066 also runs from the airport, from 5am until 11pm. This stops at the Papicu bus terminal in the tourist district of Meireles. Line 027 also stops at Papicu and runs through the same hours, but takes a slightly different route.

By Taxi

Taxis are also available 24 hours a day. It’s worth bearing in mind that there are two types of taxi, and they’re well labelled.

Tourist taxi (Coopaero) runs at a fixed price and is more expensive, costing roughly R$32 to reach the beach area from the airport.

Regular taxi (Coopertaxi) runs on a meter, with journey to Iracema or Meireles being around R$25. Remember to confirm with the driver before setting off to avoid any surprises.
