Why visit Aberdeen?

Aberdeen, a famed port city that looks out onto the North Sea, is the capital of Scotland’s oil industry, and something of a surprise. Nicknamed the Flower of Scotland because of its lovely gardens and parks, this city defies the normal industrialised look of working cities, because it is so pretty. With gorgeous Victorian and Georgian architecture defining its streets, tons of landscaped golf courses, a fancy dining scene, and plenty of events from music to theatre, you will find plenty to keep you occupied in Aberdeen.

Things to do in Aberdeen

Aberdeen is a lovely place, with a plethora of historical and cultural attractions, but you should start your stay in this city with a visit to Saint Machar’s Cathedral, a 12th century church, that will make you feel as if you’ve stepped into the set of a medieval movie. In fact, there are several medieval structures you can see here in Aberdeen, such as the 14th century Tolbooth that was once a functioning prison and town hall. It is now a museum, where you can see some fairly gruesome artefacts, including a guillotine blade.

If you have time, you should make your way to the Aberdeen Maritime Museum to learn about the seafaring side of this coastal city. The other important museum in town is Provost Skene’s House, it is the oldest standing home in the city, and you can learn how people lived, what they wore, and what they used in their daily life a few hundred years ago.

Then amble down Union Street, Aberdeen’s main thoroughfare, and a great way to get to know this city. There are lots of restaurants and cafes you can grab a bite in, as well as a great variety of shops where you can look for local souvenirs in. Lastly, this street is also popular for its numerous pubs where you can sit down and enjoy a dram of whisky.
