Front-Row Seats to Puerta del Sol: Our Stay at Hotel Europa!

The shorter version
Overall a great stay in Madrid with outstanding views of Puerta del Sol. Our room was the biggest throughout our trip in Spain!
The longer version
** Arrival & First Impressions **
After landing in Madrid, our taxi dropped us in front of Hotel Thompson Madrid. Because the area surrounding Puerta del Sol is a pedestrian-only zone, we had to roll our luggage for about 100 meters down Calle de Tetuán and Calle del Carmen — an unpleasantly loud rumble over the street paving. We arrived early around 1:00 PM, and since our room wasn't ready yet, we stowed our bags with the reception desk.
** Dining at the Hotel **
We decided to have lunch at the hotel restaurant, which offered warm service and decent food. We ordered a Vermouth, a Sangria, a red Rioja wine, creamy chicken croquetas, huevos rotos, and a paella mixta, finishing with a coconut panna cotta. However, the clear winner and our first true highlight of the trip was the local Vermouth. Afterward, we headed out for a short stroll before returning to check in around 3:30 PM.
** Service & Language **
While we are just beginning to learn Spanish, the reception staff was able to converse in English, which made our stay much easier. Connecting with locals in their native language is wonderful, but we were grateful for the smooth communication here. Darlene handled our check-in, and Carlos kindly helped us bring our luggage up to the room.
** Room #430: Space & Views **
A unique feature of this hotel is that guests can virtually pre-select their rooms. We chose room #430, a quadruple room with four beds. It turned out to be the largest accommodation of our entire trip across Madrid, Málaga, and Barcelona. Best of all, it featured two balconies offering front-row views of Puerta del Sol, putting us literally right in the bustling center of Spain. We even got a free viewing of a street dance performance at 1 am in Puerta del Sol, right from our room's balcony :) The only turnoff in the room was one of the mirrors marred by black spots.
** Amenities & Maintenance **
To surprise my family, I had pre-ordered chocolate-coated strawberries to the room. Unfortunately, they were a bit sour. We were however pleasantly surprised with a couple of complimentary fruit baskets. Overall, the property is very well-maintained; our room, the hallways, and the stair carpets were quite clean. The ground-floor restaurant and its terrace stayed buzzing with guests throughout the day.
** Breakfast & Staying Hydrated **
Although the breakfast spread could improve, it shouldn't be compared to top-tier luxury hotels. On our first day, our room was stocked with four small, complimentary bottles of water, but this was a one-time perk. Buying water at the hotel later proved expensive at €15 for four small bottles. For the rest of the trip, we bought our water much more economically at nearby El Corte Inglés and Carrefour stores.
** Luggage & Airport Transit **
Traveling with three large suitcases, three carry-ons, and personal bags, we weren't sure if a standard airport taxi would have enough boot space. To play it safe, we booked a Uber Van for our arrival. However, we realized later that Madrid's regular sedan taxis have sufficient trunk space and are a much more economical choice. Upon checkout, we easily took a standard sedan taxi from the stand on Calle Alcalá.
** Nearby things to do
Quite a lot of the attractions are accessible with a short walk - Puerta del Sol is right in front, Plaza Mayor is a 10-mins walk and Mercado San Miguel is just next to it. The El Retiro Park is about a 20 mins brisk walk. Our dining choices were also quite close for short walks, less than 10 mins. Lots of shops around too!

Excellent hotel that is more like a 4 star hotel than a 3 star hotel.
Good location near the metro. 8 minute walk to the Mercado de San Miguel. Food in the restaurant and drinks from the bar are reasonable priced.

The hotel is very centrally located, however the rooms do not have sound-proofed windows, so every police-car siren, shouting, and general noise from the street can be heard throughout the night. This is in addition to the bell from the church that rings every 15mins and then on the hour.
The room is very basic and the bathroom unfortunately had a strange smell.
The cost of the hotel was justified due to its location, but not due to the interior or facilities. The rugs for the bed to give extra warmth were dirty, so had to be exchanged at the reception.

The hotel itself was fine. If you want to stay in Sol, this is a good option. The room was comfortable enough and the hotel staff was very friendly. My one complaint is from the booking process. Booking through hotels.com, I booked an option to pay at the hotel and have a receipt saying that I put down a one night deposit while booking through hotels.com. However, I started to receive emails from the hotel saying that I had to pay a deposit through their bank. I was highly suspect of this, but saw on other sites this is a standard practice with this hotel. It ended up working out, and I did enjoy the hotel, but either the hotel or hotels.com need to update their language on the booking and confirmation because it did not line up with what I experienced and made me uncomfortable.

What a terrific location this is in, you won't be disappointed if you're after somewhere central. The hotel itself was lovely and comfy, beds were superb. Room nice and roomy and bathroom the same. Good service from the staff too.
The room had a mini fridge for you to use so buy some bottles and pop them in.....
