Hotel Clemens Amsterdam: Critical Misinformation on Accessibility
On a recent trip to Amsterdam —a city we had not visited before and whose historical center's characteristic steep stairs we were unaware of— we relied solely on the high rating of Hotel Clemens. While websites state "No elevator" and "Upper floors accessible by stairs only," they completely omit that the reception desk itself is on an upper floor. There is no ground-floor lobby; straight from the street, you must climb two flights of extremely steep stairs just to check in, with only a tiny landing halfway up. Because the staircase turns into the lobby, you cannot see the top from the bottom.
When we booked, the website's original photo was misleading and yhe stairs looked manageable. I cannot include it here because the page has since been updated, but it was similar to HOTEL CLEMENS - IMAGE 1 STAIRS, which fails to show the true, steep incline. They recently added accurate photos—like HOTEL CLEMENS STAIRS VIEW FROM TOP, HOTEL CLEMENS the-stairs-at-the-entrance NEW, and HOTEL CLEMENS TRIP ADVISOR - STAIRS DETAIL—but the structural reality remains a safety hazard.
The reception staff was wonderfully kind. Since it was raining and we arrived early from a 15-day cruise, they let us rest in the beautiful lobby, use the restroom, and save food from their excellent breakfast buffet. However, staying was physically impossible for us as seniors. Our room was assigned on the second floor above reception, meaning a total of four flights of steep stairs from the street. Furthermore, we were prevented from bringing our bags up to the room, and were not allowed to even see the rooms before checking in. Instead, we were told our suitcases had to remain downstairs in a tiny reception closet that could not fit them securely. The receptionist noted the rooms were narrow, and a friend later told us space is so tight you practically need to jump over the beds to reach the door.
Anticipating a 6:00 AM departure with heavy bags, even though they guaranteed someone would help us down, we did not feel comfortable navigating four floors of dangerous steep stairs so early in potential rain. We were forced to leave and find another hotel.
The hotel rigidly denied a refund. Fortunately, upon returning home to Florida, USA, we complained to Hotels.com. They handled it professionally, refunded slightly more than one night, and thanked us for this honest feedback. The hotel staff is lovely, and what we managed to see of the hotel is beautiful, but Hotel Clemens is entirely unsuitable for seniors, early departures, or anyone with standard luggage.

Great stay if you’re looking to keep it simple
Location is great- walking distance to many spots and also a reasonable walk to/from the tram.
I had a single room- small, but just what I needed as I spent most of the day out and about and just needed a reasonable place to sleep. Room and bathroom was cleaned every day. And while the bed was small, it was very comfortable. Slept great!
Staff was very nice. They helped with my large luggage when arriving and leaving (steep stairs!). Breakfast was perfect as well- and included.

Disappointing experience despite a few positives
We were quite shocked when we arrived and saw the seemingly never-ending, very steep and dirty staircase that we had to climb with our suitcases just to reach reception. After a long flight, this was certainly not the welcome we were expecting, especially as there is no elevator.
We then had to carry our luggage up additional flights of stairs to reach our very small bedroom. Although the room was clean, it was definitely not what we expected from a room advertised as “Deluxe.” Unfortunately, the photos online did not reflect the reality of the hotel or the room at all.
On the positive side, there were three things we really appreciated: the breakfast was good, the location in the Jordaan is fantastic, and the hotel was clean.
Overall, however, the steep and dirty staircases, lack of elevator, very small room, and misleading photos made our stay less enjoyable than expected.

Good location, nice staff, and good value. Enjoyed the stay there and the breakfast. The stairs are a good climb so be prepared.
