Ryokan Tazuru

A beautiful traditional ryokan with beautiful rooms in the traditional style. The onsen was clean and a great way to start the day. The staff were efficient friendly and helpful. Breakfasts were delicious and the ryokan provided a choice of Japanese or western meals. Location is handy for downtown Kyoto. It's also only about a 10-20 minute walk to Gpjp Station which makes it easy to get around Kyoto using the subway system.

Much potential but a great disappointment

Such as shame. This could be wonderful………Unfortunately it was very run down and in need of a complete refurbishment. The wall had stains on the wood work was shabby and the bathroom was very dated. There was no shower only hand held spray and the hairdryer was useless. It felt grubby in all areas but didn’t smell and was clean! The Onsen was closed and we were tied to a specific breakfast time which we asked to make later but was told no.
We complained to our booking company who arranged for a change of room which was on the top floor with far greater space but still in a shabby state. I would have rather stayed elsewhere as this affected my whole Kyoto experience. I couldn’t wait to leave and head to Osaka.

Nice Riokan, high price

Ryokan 10 minutes from the metro, relatively clean and quiet.
Friendly staff, caring but speaking little English.
The room is clean but small to 4.
Considering the services, the onsen does not work, it is relatively expensive because a little off-center

Lovely stay

We had a lovely 2 nights stay at this ryokan. The ryokan locates on a quiet beautiful street next to a river yet very close to subway and within walking distance to gion and restaurants. The highlights of our stay were the beautiful breakfast and their communal bath. I went to level 5 one evening for a bath and there was no one except for myself which was great !

Nice location

Very nice location close to the Kamo River, Gion and Higashiyama area.
We stayed at the annex on the other side of the road with our 3 small kids and it was like our own little apartment. It had beautiful tatami mats and we slept on the floor on futons, but this was as close at it got to a real Ryokan experience.
The place was very pretty and with the view of a small stream just outside the window. The room was spotless clean and very well maintained.
Staff was friendly but spoke very limited English. The futons were quite thin and it took a few nights to get used to virtually lying on the floor.
Will definitely stay here again if we return to Kyoto!
