Amazing nature escape
All of the buildings are historic and authentic, they are quite restricted in what updates can be done but they are quite clean and comfortable. Lots of outdoor spaces to rest and read.
It was a couples trip and I think very romantic as you have almost no one else around and beautiful nature everywhere. We hired a local guide for a hike who was very good, he knew a lot about local flora and fauna. Spotted a few birds and monkeys, saw the overlook to the Himalayas. Another morning a lodge employee took us on a short walk.
As the estate is a good 45 minutes into Binsar Park, up a rough road you MUST spend at least two nights to make it worthwhile. Also the park gate closes at about 6 pm so be sure you make it by then. There was a nice economy lodge close by where our driver stayed and he enjoyed the quiet also.
A wonderful getaway from the crowds and bustle of most of India. Well worth the time and cost.

In The Midst Of Nature
The Mary Budden Estate (MBE) is located deep inside the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, a 3.5 hour drive from Nainital. It is a sprawling estate spread over different levels inside the forest. There are mostly self-contained cottages with bedrooms, sitting areas, toilets and dining areas. The style is intentionally rustic but does not lack for all modern facilities. The cottages all look out over the valley and on a good day you can see Nanda Devi and the surrounding range.
Not much wildlife at the Resort but we did see a simian family close by. It is very isolated and, apart from some walks through the forest, you will require transport to travel anywhere. It can get cold but the Resort lights fires in the evening for a very cosy experience.
There is no electricity and water is trucked in from Almora, about 20 kilometers away. The Resort runs on solar and generators. The costs of running the Resort is very high given that almost everything has to be trucked in from a distance. This is reflected in the room charges which, in my view, are still quite high for the kind of facility on offer. In my view, it is probably not a honeymoon destination but would be great with a group of 5-6 friends.
All things considered, staying at MBE is a great experience and I would probably visit again.
