Expect the amenities to be first-class in Vienna’s airport, with lots of ATMs and currency exchange booths, as well as free wireless internet throughout the terminals. You will also find a large range of designer retailers and duty-free shops, and a plethora of bars, restaurants and cafes to grab refreshments in.

At only 16km from the city centre, Vienna International Airport is easy to travel to and from. Connections are made via the rail, buses or taxis. The latter mode of transport can be picked up right outside the terminals, and will cost you around 30-35EUR ($44-51) to get into central Vienna.

Things to do in Vienna

This is a musical town, having nurtured the talents of Mozart, and German-born Beethoven, so it is worth visiting and perhaps booking a show at the famous Vienna State Opera House and catching a composition by these two famed composers. The building itself is one of the most splendid in all of Europe and worth a tour for its own merits.

If you’re a history buff, then add some of the city’s palaces to your itinerary. In particular the Hofburg, which was the premier seat for the Habsburg dynasty for over 600 years. The palace complex is set over almost 60 acres, and is filled with treasures from these royals who lived here, as well housing the excellent Natural History Museum, and the Austrian National Library. The other royal residence that is worth a visit is the Schönbrunn Palace, a later (but stunning) addition to the city’s skyline. This attraction is particularly good for families, as the palace is set in beautiful gardens, and is home to the Children’s Museum, where visiting tykes can dress up as royals themselves. 

Other prominent attractions in the city are the National Theatre, the Vienna City Hall, the Austrian Parliament Building, the Spanish Riding School, and the austere, but beautiful St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Best time to visit Vienna

·         For city touring, the country’s shoulder months hover around 15-21°C, and are perfect for sightseeing.

·         Summers (June-August) tend to be more crowded and more expensive, but you’re more likely to get those beautiful summer days. Daily averages during this season are around 19-20°C with highs of about 26°C.

·         Winters in Austria are renowned for being enchanting, but pack warmly, seasonal averages can dip to-3°C.

·         Fly to Vienna from Sydney (SYD), Brisbane (BNE), Sydney (SYD), Perth (PER) and Adelaide (ADL). You’ll find that flights to this city will generally stop in cities like Bangkok (BKK) or Doha (DOH).
