The international airport that serves the National Capital Region of Canada is Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport, located in the south end of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada, the capital city of the country. The airport is situated 10.2 kilometres or 6.3 miles south of downtown Ottawa. It serves as a focus city for Air Canada and Porter Airlines, and as the main base for First Air. Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport resides at an elevation of 374 feet or 114 metres above mean sea level, and operates with three asphalt-surfaced runways. In 2014, it handled approximately 4.6 million passengers, and had about 155,000 aircraft movements.

Ottawa in the eastern part of Southern Ontario is multicultural city with an interesting diversity that makes it a notable tourist destination. Traditionally, most of the cultural scene of Ottawa was concentrated in the ByWard Market, Parliament Hill, and the Golden Triangle. Today, the scene has extended to Wellington Street, Rideau Street, Sussex Drive, Elgin Street, Bank Street, Somerset Street, Preston Street, and Sparks Street, hosting several boutiques, museums, theatres, art galleries, as well as significant landmarks and memorials, along with a wide range of dining establishments, cafes, bars, and nightclubs. The largest festival in Canada, Winterlude, is also held in Ottawa. A UNESCO Heritage Site can also be found in the city, which is the Rideau Canal. What’s very amazing about this attraction is that much of the canal was done by hand.

How to get around within Ottowa

Ottawa is served by a comprehensive bus and light rail network, operated by OC Transpo. This network involves a bus rapid system called the Transitway, which runs through and out of the downtown area. The network also includes the O-Train.

Taxis also serve the city, and are very frequent downtown. However for other areas, it is best to book one through phone. Car rentals are also an option. With Ottawa’s density of attractions and pedestrian-friendly thoroughfares, walking is also a common way to get around. Popular pedestrian areas include the ByWard Market and Sparks Street.

The downtown area of Ottawa is also served by a bike sharing system, as well as a number of bicycles for rent. Gatineau Park has many nice cycling paths, along with many other attractions along the river near Gatineau.

The canal starts from the St. Lawrence River at Kingston to the Ottawa River at Ottawa. By car, the city can be reached via the 401, 416, and 417 highways, and highway 7.
