Discover Stuttgart

Served by Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH, the city of Stuttgart makes an outstanding destination to unwind in the urban amenities and the surrounding natural landmarks. It is located 13 kilometres south of the city and lies on the boundary between the nearby town of Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Filderstadt, and Stuttgart itself. Several facilities can be found here, such as the Stuttgart Trade Fair and the global car parking company APCOA Parking.

Being a hub of Germanwings, Stuttgart Airport offers flights to and from several European cities and leisure destinations. A small number of long-haul services can also be found here, which can be convenient for those travelling overseas. This has increased the passenger traffic in the airport, which reached about nine million in 2012.

What to see & do

Lying in a basin enclosed by orchards and forest-covered hills, the city of Stuttgart seems to have the best between an urban and rural destination. It features historic buildings and the headquarters of several car manufacturing companies such as Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Adventurous tourists can also take off for the fruit farms, the River Neckar, or any of the productive mineral springs.

Those who want to stay in the city can check out various wonderful landmarks. One of them is the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (State Gallery), the home of the finest art collections in the country. It is well known for its fine collection of 20th-century paintings, impressive collections of German Renaissance art and a number of masterpieces from Dutch and Italian masters from the 14th to 19th centuries. Being the cradle of the German automobile industry, one will find here the Mercedez-Benz Museum, with its exhibits relating to the development of this fine vehicle brand. The main exhibit to check out here is the display of more than 160 vehices, as well as the Untertürkheim diesel engine factory.

When out on a carefree day, tourists can venture to the expansive Schlossplatz, surrounded by buildings from the city's past role as a ducal and royal capital. The centre of this wide open space is its beautiful gardens and the Jubilee Column, which dates back from 1841 as a commemoration of the 25th year of rule by King William I. Others will find pieces of modern sculpture and a lovely fountain. On the northwest side of the square is the Königsbau, a shopping arcade, while on the southwest is the Kleiner Schlossplatz with many boutiques and restaurants.

A preference for outdoor destinations can take you to the Sepulchral Chapel on Württemberg Hill. After checking out the beautiful structure of the Grabkapelle, one can go on a walk and bask in the splendid views of the city and the Neckar Valley. There is also the Wilhema Zoological and Botanic Garden, with its finely laid-out hothouses, animal houses, and an aquarium. About 1,000 species reside here, as well as an impressive collection of plants.
