Discover Salzburg

Salzburg can easily be defined as a City of Music, due to its rich musical heritage, as well as a breathtaking natural panorama that seems to inspire creativity among its home-grown and transplanted artists. Going here can be possible through Salzburg Airport, which additionally serves as a gateway to the numerous ski areas in Austria. It is located on the south-western side, about three kilometres away from the city centre and two kilometres from the Austrian-German border.

Also named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Salzburg Airport was first opened in 1910, when the first aircraft taxied on the race track in Salzburg-Aigen for the first time. Flight routes started to be organised, with 1939 seeing the introduction of the routes to Berlin, Prague, Munich, Klagenfurt, Ljubljana, Rijeka, and Venice. After being freed from German occupation at the end the World War II, commercial flights started again and continued to grow through the years as the airport became a transit point for several seasonal charter operations across different parts of Europe and Russia.

What to see & do

Salzburg has no shortage of architectural gems to charm its tourists. One will find here the Festung Hohensalzburg, one of the most famous icons of the city. This 900-year-old fortress on the top of a cliff is one of the biggest and best preserved in Europe, where visitors can check out the ramparts for panoramic views over the city's spires, the river, and the mountains. Although it began as a humble structure, the present grandeur of the fortress is owed to Prince-Archbishop Leonard von Keutschach between 1495 and 1519. Going around here will let visitors see the Golden Hall, where lavish banquets were once celebrated.

From here, one can then venture to the Residenz, the most awe-inspiring sight in the DomQuartier. It was where the prince-archbishops used to hold court before the 19th century. Highlights of a visit here include the Residenzgalerie with works by Flemish and Dutch masters. The state rooms are also outstanding, with rich decorations of tapestries, stucco, and frescoes. There is also the Mozart Wohnhaus, which served as a one-time residence of the musical genius. It features family portraits, documents, and instruments, as well as Mozart's original fortepiano.

Dom, a cathedral crowned by a copper dome and twin spires, makes an excellent example of an artistic baroque structure. The place is a sight to behold with the bronze portals symbolising faith, hope, and charity. The nave and stucco are also beautiful, with the ceiling frescoes depicting the Passion of Christ, which guides the eye to the dome. Visitors can then move to the museums, such as the Salzburg Museum, which is housed in the baroque Neue Residenz Palace. Displays on the city's past and present, as well as ornate rooms featuring fine art exhibits can be seen here.
