Discover Tokyo Narita
If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo anytime soon, you will most probably go through Narita International Airport. Also known as Tokyo Narita Airport, it is the primary international airport serving the Greater Tokyo Area of Japan. It is located in the city of Narita in Chiba. The airport is Japan’s second busiest passenger airport and busiest air freight hub. It had a total number of 35,478,146 passengers in 2007. Majority of international passenger traffic to and from Japan is being handled by Tokyo Narita Airport. It is also a major connecting point for air traffic between Asia and the Americas. It is the primary international hub of Japan's flag carrier Japan Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Nippon Cargo Airlines, as well as low-cost carriers Jetstar Japan and Vanilla Air. It is also an Asian hub for Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. Currently, the airport has two separate terminals with separate underground train stations. Shuttle buses connect passengers from one terminal to the other. No pedestrian connection is available.
What to see & do in Tokyo
Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Tree – The Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Tree is a staple as it is one of the most iconic places to visit Tokyo. Not being able to go to the tallest towers in the city is almost the same as missing out on Paris’ Eiffel Tower.
Ueono-koen – Known as Tokyo’s oldest park, this place showcases both museums and temples for those who are seeking a more cultural itinerary.
Kabuki-za – If you are looking for traditional performance arts, the theatres at Kabuki-za will entice you with Japan’s traditions. Every month, performances will vary, so some may be more popular than others, but catching a show here will certainly be memorable.
How to get around Tokyo
There are several ways to navigate around Tokyo, having one of the world’s most extensive mass transit systems. The main rail line that serves the city is the JR Yamanote Line, which runs in a loop around
Tokyo’s core. The city has an extensive subway network with trains running frequently, making getting around Tokyo easier and more convenient. There are also a number of private commuter lines that service from the Yamanote loop out into the wards and suburbs, and almost all connect through directly to subway lines within the loop. If you’re travelling with a group of three or more, it may be better value for your money to take a taxi rather than travelling alone. If you want to drive around, you can take the main expressway, Shuto or Shutoko. However, it is not recommended to drive a car around since Tokyo has narrow, unnamed streets with limited and expensive parking. For some areas not accessible by train, you can take the bus. If you want to get around by ferry, the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company operates a series of Water Bus along the Sumida River and in Tokyo Bay, which connects Asakusa, Harumi, Hinode, and Odaiba. There are rare bicycle lanes in Tokyo, but bikes are commonly used. You can rent a bike from some youth hostels or buy a simple single-speed roadster (which is fairly cheap) and comes complete with a built-in bicycle wheel lock system. Tokyo is a very safe city to walk around, even at night. You can explore the city, sightsee, or visit some tourist spots within Tokyo.
