Kuching International Airport (KCH) is the main airport serving the Sarawak region of Malaysian Borneo. You’ll find the airport is pretty small, but it has been recently renovated, so there is a decent range of facilities. You’ll find a premium lounge, free WiFi, ATMs and foreign exchange services in the CIMB Bank, a few fast food outlets, and a Starbucks. Otherwise, you can find an information desk, and a duty-free area to purchase goods.

Only 11 short kilometres from the city centre, passengers can reach the downtown area by taking official airport taxis. You can buy a coupon in the terminal building, and it should come to less than 20MYR ($20).

Why visit Kuching?

Kuching is the premier city in Malaysia’s mysterious and beautiful Borneo region. The golden tipped temples of this city vie for space with museums, gardens, marketplaces, and the city’s palace. There is a lovely waterfront popular with tourists for its excellent restaurants, and nearby, you will find tons of national parks. There is more to explore here, naturally and culturally, than you will have time for in your first trip, but luckily, Kuching is the type of place that will convince you into booking a second.

Things to do in Kuching

Spend your first few hours in Kuching wandering the banks of the Sarawak River, it will help you get situated, and give you an idea of where to spend your evening, as most of the nightlife takes place along the waterfront here.

Tour the many museums that look at the blending cultures of this part of the world, such as the Islam Museum, the Chinese Museum, the Textiles Museum, the Cat Museum, and probably the most impressive, the Natural History Museum and Art Gallery. If you can, make time for the Sarawak Cultural Village, where you can see traditional houses, and gain an insight to the different tribal and cultural groups that make up Sarawak.

Then visit the lovely temples of this town, such as the Hiang Thian Siang Temple, the Kuching City Mosque, and the Tua Pek Kong Temple.

The outside the city, you can find some the spectacular landscape Borneo is known for. Such as the Fairy and Wind Caves, the perfect turquoise waters of the Sarawak River, the trails up to Mount Santubong, the waterfalls of the Kubah National Park, and a chance to go deep into the jungles and meet the tribes that populate the incredible longhouses of deepest reaches of Malaysia.

Best time to visit Kuching

·         The temperatures in this part of the world merely hover between 23 and 32°C, so you’ll never feel chilly. However, the wet and dry season in Sarawak is very pronounced, and you will definitely notice a difference if you choose to go in either. We recommend the dry season, between April and September, as otherwise you will be swamped with rainfall.

·         You can get away with one stop when travelling to Kuching, usually in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) or Singapore (SIN).
