Florence Airport sees millions of passengers pass through its doors every year, so is stocked with all the standard amenities. There are duty free shops, two restaurants, an ATM and free WiFi. For changing money, you are best waiting until you get into town.

Getting into Florence from the airport is fairly straightforward. Only 4km from the centre of town, you can take a bus quite easily into the central part of the city, or hop in a taxi for 20EUR ($30).

Carriers that often fly this route are Alitalia, British Airways, Austrian Airlines, FlyNiki, KLM, Lufthansa, Swiss Air and Air Berlin.

This city’s reputation precedes it, but you will find that if you come to Florence, its romance and beauty, its charm and vibrancy, will meet all of your expectations.

Things to do in Florence

Patron to many of Italy’s greatest artistic masters such as Michelangelo, and Da Vinci, many come to Florence to visit the world-famous Uffizi Gallery, an enormous building that houses some of the most renowned, and vaunted pieces of art. Save half a day for this gallery and wear comfortable shoes, as this attraction is one of Italy’s most sought after, and it deserves a good chunk of your time.

Once you’ve seen the Uffizi, head down to the Accademia Gallery, where you can stand before the marbled perfection of Michelangelo’s David. Then spend an afternoon at the Pitti Palace, the sprawling ducal home of the Medicis, a powerful aristocratic family that ruled Florence for hundreds of years. Make sure you buy the separate ticket to the gorgeous Boboli Gardens, one of the loveliest parts of the city.

For an expansive view, you cannot do better than the Piazza Michelangelo, and from there, it is a quick walk to the San Minato church, an excellent example of 11-13^th century architecture, and a lovely counterpoint to the Duomo of Florence.

Of course, you must make time for Florence’s most iconic building, the Duomo and its Baptistry. If you’re feeling game, climb to the top of the Duomo’s Cupola for an up-close look at the murals on the ceiling inside, and a jaw-dropping view from the outside.

Lastly, wander down the Ponte Vecchio, peruse the jewellery, then grab a delicious gelato on the corner, and watch the sun go down over the Arno.

Best time to visit Florence

· June through to August is the summer season, but during this time, Florence is hot and crowded, and if you can pick and choose your times, the spring and autumn seasons are far more preferable. April and May see highs of 15-18°C, whilst September and October are a little warmer at 21-26°C.

· Winters are fairly mild, swinging between 2-10°C, and prices will be at their lowest, though there is a good chance it’ll be fairly rainy this time of year.

· Flying to Florence will undoubtedly mean at least one to two stops on the way. These are usually in Singapore (SIN), Bangkok (BKK), Frankfurt (FRA), and Paris (CDG).
