The impressive city of Rome is serviced by two airports; the Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and the Ciampino Airport (CIA), though you’ll discover that the former (FCO) is the primary international hub for the city, and travellers from Australia will be directed here. The amenities in this airport offer all the standards you’d expect from a major hub, such as cash machines, bureaux de change, free WiFi, restaurants, cafes and duty-free shopping outlets.

Fiumicino Airport is situated 32km out of the city, and the city centre can be reached by rail, buses or taxis. Generally a journey into the downtown area will run up a fare of 50-55EUR ($77-85).

Things to do in Rome

Start in the Piazza Navona, was once the site of the great Stadium of Domition, but in the 15^th century it was paved over in the Baroque style and became the famed marketplace of Rome. Pair this with a visit to the Trevi Fountain, a beautiful 17^th century fountain that has captured the romance of Rome ever since Anita Ekberg waded into its waters in La Dolce Vita.

However, it is perhaps Rome’s ancient sites that bring so many people flocking to its streets, and if you are a history lover, there is enough here to keep you occupied for years. Perhaps the most important site within this part of Rome is the Pantheon. Then make time for Rome’s most iconic site: The Colosseum, a remarkable monument that has been our fascinating window into Roman entertainment. If you are travelling with family, this attraction will delight the children, as they learn all about the fierce gladiators that once fought here.

If you can, you should also head to Vatican City, where much of Rome’s magnificent art is held. In particular, the great master, Michelangelo has his works adorning many of the buildings here, including the world-famous fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel ‘The Creation of Adam’, and his masterpiece sculpture, Pietà.

Best time to visit Rome

·         The months of September and October in the Rome’s autumn season are really wonderful for touring the city. The days sit at 16-21°C, are mostly dry, and the hotel prices tend to take a dip.

·         Spring is also pleasant, though a little colder at 15-18°C.

·         Summers are hot, hot, hot and pretty crowded, with days spiking at 30°C, whilst winters are quiet, but can sink to chills lows of 4°C.

·         Rome is a major European destination, and welcomes flights from all over the world. Australians can depart from any major hub in the nation, and be directed through to Rome. Expect flights to be routed through cities like Dubai (DXB) and Singapore (SIN).
