The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) serves both Dallas, Fort-Worth, and functions as one of the primary airports in America’s southwestern region. It is only 24km from the centre of Dallas, and all travellers–whether seasoned or not—will find this to be a comprehensive facility with lots of amenities. There are information centres, helpful airport ambassadors, loads of ATMs and currency exchange counters, there is access to free WiFi throughout the five terminals, and several work stations. You will also find over 100 retail outlets you can browse in, and a similar number of eateries that you can choose from. Beyond that, you’ll discover there are kid-friendly designated areas, a spa service, and a hairdressers located in this airport.

There are rail services, shuttles and taxis that run into the city, with the latter costing a flat rate fare of 45USD ($63) for the journey into central Dallas, or 48USD ($67) if you are planning to visit Fort Worth.

Direct flights to Dallas from Australia are operated by Qantas, but you can find connecting journeys with American Airlines, Delta, Virgin Australia, Air New Zealand, and United.

Why visit Dallas?

Dallas conjures images of bolo ties, cowboy hats, and a kind of brash charm, and you will find all of these things in this city, but Dallas is so much more. For every cowboy hat you will find a chic restaurant, a hipster bar, and a trendy pop-up concert. This is the powerhouse city of Texas, and its streets contain gleaming skyscrapers, vaunted museums, treasured galleries, and a sophisticated city-crowd that will dispel any notions that Dallas is anything less than a cosmopolitan and worldly American metropolis.

Things to do in Dallas

Hit up Dallas’ cultural attractions, such as the Dallas Museum of Art, standing for over 100 years, and carrying more than 20,000 pieces of art from all over both the Americas and the world. Then tour the African American museum, unique in the southwestern area, and dedicated to the display of African American art, cultural artefacts and historical materials. However, you must make time for the Dealey Plaza and its infamous Sixth Floor Museum. Known primarily as the spot where Lee Harvey Oswald carried out his assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Then take advantage of the city’s great weather by strolling through the Dallas Arboretum and its Botanic Gardens. Situated just along White Rock Lake and its accompanying park, this is one of the prettiest spots in the city; you can wander the manicured gardens or take a tour of the mansion on the grounds.

Then top off a stay here by Greenville and Lower Greenville where much of Dallas’ foodie scene has come out to compete. Or try out Oak Lawn, and its celebrated “corridor of meats” where you can get to grips with great burger and BBQ places, and revel in the enormous Texan portion sizes.

Best time to visit Dallas

·         Autumn (September to November) is the best time to drop by Dallas, because the peak of the summer heat has left the city, but the days are still very warm, hovering between 18-31°C.

·         Summers are hot, hot, hot, and take no prisoners, with the average day sitting at 34-35°C. These months are also incredibly busy, and are not the most ideal time to visit this city.

Arriving in Dallas by plane

·         There are direct flights to Dallas (DFW) from Sydney (SYD). From other cities in Australia, you will be subject to a layover either in Sydney, or Los Angeles (LAX) or San Francisco (SFO).
