Flights to Republic of the Congo
The Republic of the Congo – not to be confused with its neighbour, the Democratic Republic of the Congo – is one of the best places in Africa in terms of ecotourism. Lowland gorillas, chimpanzees, and a host of other creatures roam the wild here, making it an exciting area to visit in Central Africa. A large part of the country remains unexplored, however, due to the little amount of attention it receives from travellers worldwide. One reason is the lack of exposure, as tourism is not as prioritised as oil and agriculture, the mainstays of the Congolese economy.
Although troubled with unstable political conditions, travellers are relatively safe in Congo. One just has to keep up the usual precautions when going around another country. From here, one can arrange an itinerary to explore some of the 12 departments in this fascinating destination where one can have the chance to interact closely with the wildlife.
What to see & do
When in Congo, travellers will have a chance to get close to some of the world's greatest wild creatures in its natural habitat. One must be conscious about the safety while in the jungle, however, so a knowledgeable guide must be hired before going deep into the forest. This way, one can watch the wildlife from a safe viewpoint without startling or spooking them.
Tourists can start looking for private or group tours venturing to Parc National Nouabalé-Ndoki. This swampy forest was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012 due to its healthy biodiversity of various types of wild creatures such as gorillas, forest elephants, and more. Those interested in seeing gorillas in particular can visit Parc National D'Odzala near the border with Gabon. There are many viewing platforms here, and some basic accommodations for tourists interested in camping out. Upscale safari lodges can also be found here for those who want more comfortable facilities.
Parc National Conkouati-Douli is also a destination not to be missed. The coastal savannah goes up into the forested mountains where one can find elephants and buffaloes living here. Boat rides and forest walk tours are available here, as well as sea turtle watching between November and February. Chimpanzee feeding is also an attraction here, which can be an experience to cross off in a Congolese adventure.
Another attraction in Congo is Pointe-Noire where one will find a resort town where many expatriate oil workers usually congregate. Tourists can book accommodations at the seaside hotels and eat in restaurants that feature local cuisine such as moambe, a stew with thick red sauce with chunks of beef, mutton, or chicken. Satori is also included in the local menu, which is tilapia fillets fried with pumpkin seeds, garlic, and plantains. One can follow this up with chikwanga, a simple cassava treat pounded into paste, wrapped in banana leaves, and then boiled in a pot.
How to get around Congo
Travellers going around in Congo will have to bear with the challenges of public transport. Passenger trains from Brazzaville to Pointe-Noire are available, but not open due to conflicts in the Malebo Pool region. The roads to the north are sealed as far as the town of Oyo. After passing through the boundary, roads will become increasingly rough. Travellers in the major towns can move within and beyond the city limits with minibuses where the Congolese often bring livestock and produce on board. There are also shared taxis to be found with cheap fares, which is suitable for those in groups.
